OK, here is a "plan". Federal Arms has politically correct single stack Maadi AKs for $179, and they come with 5 mags. Shipping would be about $10. So far you are out $189.
Get a Global trades American parts kit for $83.99.$5 to ship, so it's $88.99. So far you are out $277.99. Sell the 5 single stack mags for $10 each, and you are down to $227.99.

Cut the receiver to accept the high cap mags, since the trunion and catch are correct on the Maadi, put in the American parts, and voila! You have a high-cap AK for $227.99!

This asumes of course you have an FFL, or know someone who does. Maybe add $10 or $20 to the total for the FFL fee.

Is my reasoning flawed?

Is it legal?

How do you "cut" the receiver? If you have to pay a machine shop that would be extra bucks.

Cut a receiver? Get a Dremil tool, a hi-cap mag and a #2 pencil.

Go for it, Babe!

Balming, for a little more, start with a SA2000 (nicer fit and finish). Sell 3 mags for what you can get (???). Cut out the bottom of the receiver, and 2 sheetmetal pieces inside. Sell the Choate stock, and put on whatever you want (or keep the Choate). I sure hope it's legal -- I did it this weekend. Put 20 rnds through it w/o failure. I expect that will go to 20 000.

By the way, the transfer, taxes, background check, etc. added $50 to the cost of mine, having a dealer order it. He charged 10% for his services, the rest were fixed charges.

This is the Hungarian, right? I was looking at those in the SGN. Is the rear trunnion where the stock fits cut funny on those?

You are saying that the front trunnion is standard AK and need not be ground?
