I bought 3 boxes of Eley ammo today...questions

I ponied up for three boxes of Eley at the show today. I never thought I'd see the day when I'd lay out $3.50-3.95/50 for .22LR ammo!:eek:

Anyhoo, I have Eley Practice, Standard Pistol and Standard. According to a list I found all are 40g rounds with only about 50fps difference between them. Practice and Standard run 1085 and Pistol Standard runs 1030.

Any ideas as to why the slight difference and which would be better for what?:confused:

All of the ammo that you bought is practice grade Eley. Basically, the price difference is for additional levels of quality control. There's a few differences such as the one you noted-pistol ammo is slower. Mostly though, it's designed for the level of accuracy and consistency they think you'll need. Pistol ammo for example probably doesn't need to be as accurate as .22 benchrest rifle ammo, as it is shot at closer range. Hence, less quality checks and a lower price, but not necessarily worse accuracy or even consistency.
Let us know how it shoots, as I'm not likely to pony up for eley any time soon!!

Some fellows at my club shoot low(er) velocity rimfire at our monthly silhouette shoot, they claim they get better accuracy with a slower bullet, but wind seems to affect it more than standard velocity.

When I shoot .22 pistol at 25yds I do find that the lower velocity ammo helps my groups, I even like to shoot Remington sub-sonic as my Buckmark really likes it.

Poodleshooter is correct the price reflects quality control, a few shooters at my club will "break away" and start shooting Lightning,Dynapoint, Zapper etc and claim they shoot great and they will never buy high priced ammo again.....well after a few shoots with so-so scores here come those same guys back, but with RWS, Federal Match, or any of that other high priced stuff :)

Well Awp if you think $3.50 is a lot, my spoiled little brat Anschutz
will only eat Lapua Midas L at around $12 a box:eek: But fortunately I have more down to earth BSA Intl. that will tolerate Federal Match at a mere $5 a box;)

BTW both Arlington and Haltom city are nice clubs, I belong to one down by Alvarado...bit of a drive but I have a lot of friends there.

:) I just wanted to say I shoot a .22lr at least once or twice a week. And by no means am I a professional gunsmith or shooter.But we all know that diffrent guns like diffrent types of ammo. And, it all goes into consideration ,I mean my 10/22 target rifle likes the Lapua Midas M and its a costly ammo. So that means ,I'm not going to shoot tin cans or what not with it. But, when I buy my target ammo I buy it by the brick so it will all have the same lot # on it. That way I know it was all produced around the same time and that its more than likely it will all be the same as far as consistency goes. But, if you look at all the kinds of ammo usally you can find a certain type that preforms well for average plinking it just all depends on your usage. If im going to shoot in a match, Im going to shoot what ever ammo I feel that gives me the advantage and consistancy to compete. As far as plinking I've always had good luck with the CCI standard velocity even with hunting ! I do belive the higher velocity ammo tends not to shoot as good of group as the standard or match ammo, If it does your really lucky Cause I've yet to own a rifle that does! Well I hope this might help someone out. :D
