I am trying to get a grasp on this.

- How much are K-VAR's, Progressive's, or this Chief Thunder gentleman's kits?

- How can one find a suitable reciever and what can you expect to pay?

- How much gunsmithing is required and what is the approximate cost?

- I already know about the $200 SBR fee.

Add it all together & how much does this cost....at least a ball park figure. I need to figure out if I can afford this.

Thanks a bunch guys.

Cost of the kits are as follows, KVAR 250, Progressive 199.
Kvars kit has wood hand guards, and the barrel assembly is already pressed together.
If your gonna do the work yourself, this is the kit to get IMHO.
Progressives is not pressed together, and has black synthetic handguards (at least thats what I heard)

Receivers are up in the air. Ive heard that 7.62 and 5.45 receivers can work.
If you want a 5.45 receiver thats bare and ready to accept a parts kit, go with global trades. They are pricey at 170, but would work.
A 7.62 receiver is a little different in the fact that the ejector is 1mm or less smaller than that of the 5.45. People on this board say they work, and if not, can be easily welded up to do so.
www.tennesseeguns.com (http://www.tennesseeguns.com) sells a US made receiver in 7.62 that has the trigger pivot pin holes drilled, but not the rivit holes, for 80 bucks.
Global trades receiver has no holes drilled.
IF you do this yourself, get the kvar kit. YOu would just have to drill the holes in the receiver for the rivits, get a rivit tool, and rivit the thing together. You would also have to mill a slot for the buttstock release.
OF course, if you use a post ban receiver, you have to have no more than ten imported parts on the gun... and you have to drill holes in the krinkov booster to make it non flash hider, and you have to weld the buttstock in the open position. Or you could buy a preban receiver, and rip it apart for the receiver.
Lots of choices, all not that easy.

Section 922r does not apply to NFA short barreled rifle weapons per James Bardwell. If you pay the $200 tax you can build one on a post ban reciever as long as the stock does not fold and the flash hider is drilled open two holes .15 ea and permantly attached.

Mr XXX
Address
City, State

Dear Mr. XXX:

This refers to your letter of February 28, 1994, in
which you
inquire as to whether the making of certain National Firearm Act
(NFA) weapons is prohibited by Title 18 United States Code
(U.S.C.), Chapter 44, Section 922(r). The weapon in question is a
FN/FAL type firearm having a barrel length of less than 16 inches
which is assembled from an imported British L1A1 parts kit and a
domestically manufactured frame or receiver.

Title 18 U.S.C., Chapter 44, Section 922(r) provides that it shall
be unlawful for any person to assemble from imported parts any
semiautomatic rifle or shotgun which is identical to any rifle or
shotgun prohibited from importation under 18 U.S.C., Chapter 44,
Section 925(d)(3), as not being particularly suitable for or
readily adaptable to sporting purposes.

However, the Bureau has previously determined that the lawful
making of an NFA weapon would not violate Section 922(r), since the
section only addresses the assembly of "nonsporting" firearms, and
not the making of NFA weapons. Therefore, the lawful making of a
short barreled rifle would not be precluded by Section 922(r).

If you decide to proceed with your project, it will be necessary
for you to obtain prior approval by first submitting an ATF Form 1
(Application To Make and Register a Firearm) and paying the
appropriate $200 making tax. Additional information relative to
this procedure may be obtained from the following source:

We trust that the foregoing was responsive to your inquiry. If we
may be of any further assistance, please contact us.

Sincerely yours,

I wouldn't build a krink in post ban (fixed stock no flash hider) configuration.IMHO I think its a waste. I'm just gonna spend a few bucks more for the pre-ban gun.

Alot has changed at the ATF tech branch since Ed Owens has retired. The new guy is a ,well, never mind.
