This little Mauser followed me home from a gun auction last weekend - was sort of an impulse buy - 1909 Argentine long rifle. Had not really looked at it when it came up but apparently nobody else had either - hooked it for $125. The bore is crisp and clean and the blueing is probably 95%. There is a chip near the through bolt in the wood but other than that it looks good. However, I do not beleive the floor plate is correct - I think it should it should be hinged with out the swing swivel in front of the trigger guard. Of course in these pics you can not see it - stupid cameraman.

I don't think the floorplate should be hinged. Never seen any model 95 or 98 pattern Mausers with a hinged floorplate. I have seen such weapons with a swivel hole in the front of the trigger guard however.

floorplate. I have three I bought in the early 70's that has the nicest floorplate set up I have ever seen. It is serial numbered to the receiver. If you find one on the parts market they are really out there as far as prices go .....chris3
How about a 1909 Argy......I'm before coffee.....chris3

That was what I got from my reading - that the floorplate should have been serialized to the receiver. This one is not. Plus I have never seen a gun with four sling swivels. Anyway here is a pic of the front and a better shot of the floorplate.

Humm . . . Yep this is most unusual. The swivel up on the front barrel band that has the bayonet lug as part of it . . . normally has a hook to put the sivel on for stretching out the sling for parade use.
I wonder if somebody didn't put a swivel in there and then bend it over to capture it. Can't tell from the picture of the front end if this is the case. Is it held in by a bolt through a closed loop as on the band behind it or is there a gap at the front o fthe metal loop where the hook might have been forged down over the swivel?

Everything up front seems to be correct - the front swivel has is part of the barrel band and is attached just like the #2 swivel. The bayo lug is square and about 1.5 inches long amd os cast onto a cap that the front barrel band covers. The swivel I can not figure out is the one on the front of the trigger guard - it is a closed loop. Figure it is not original to the gun.

The one on the trigger guard I have seen on other older Mauser models before and they are closed as well, no bolt holding them on. The closest picture of such a rifle I can find having all the sling swivels is in SARCO's ad in Shotgun News for the GEW repo sling. That rifle has 4 swivels as well.

All the 1909's I have seen have only had two swivels, one on the butt and one on the middle band. I am starting to wonder if the trigger frame is not original. 1909's should not have the hole in the front of the trigger guard.

Yep, that is what I thought, the front end has been modified too. The original bayo attachment lug has been replaced by a typical 98k style. The Argentine 1909 bayonet has a very high hilt where it attaches to the muzzle, much like a 38 Turk.

The hole in front of the trigger guard is where the release for that hinged floorplate is located. I only have one 1909 but all numbers match, receiver, floorplate, stock, etc.
