Ok, I need to pin this sucker together. So far I think I've figured out where to drill. I will now use my extensive computer skills to provide a highly detailed locating diagram.

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1389989&a=10374415&p=38281215

What I need to know is:
1. What size bits to use.
2. How to start drilling (just use the indentation as a guide?
3. How far to drill (do I just drill straight out the other side or stop somewhere?)

I have 2 small pins in my pack-o-pins here. They are obviously for locations 2 and 3. Unfortunately there are 3 medium sized ones. Pin "A" is the longest and has a rounded head on it. Pin "B" is not quite as long but is skinniest. Pin "C" is the shortest medium sized pin, but is sorta thicker than "B". I think it's the top cover hinge, right? So which pin goes in location 1?

(Don't forget about the other questions please)

Okay stop laughing. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/biggrin.gif Any help?

You use a "D" size drill bit (commonly an aircraft type bit available at your local industrial tool supply house) and a 1/4" hardened steel pin, aka shear pin, 1 1/4" long. Some of these pins come in pairs. The ones I bought were longer and will have to be cut to length. Put the pin in with a good hammer.

Is it possible to drill the holes with a hand drill or do you have to use a drill press?

If you can do it with a hand drill, how do you keep the drill bit from "walking around" the barrel when drilling through the front and rear sight blocks?

Sturmgewehr44,I can answer two of your questions.
1.What size bits?-I'm still working on that in the other thread.Although I have used 1/4" before with mixed results-one pin was tight as Hell, the other slide in.
2.&3.How to start drilling? Those indentations are pilot holes.Just line your bit up with them and drill straight through(if you try it from both sides you will end up with V shape instead of a straight line). At the com-block AK factory they drill straight through, that's why they only put the pilot holes on one side.
You want to use a drill press-I messed up one barrel, years ago, by trying to "freehand" with a hand drill.Feel free to learn from my mistake.

Fargo, I don't hold grudges. You want to use a drill press; its much more precise and straight, if you can.

The reason you use a "D" size bit is its just a tad smaller than 1/4" so you get a tight fit with the pin.
