Acutally you can make a forearm out of a Bulgarian or K-Var synthetic piece by cutting the front off with a band saw to the proper length. It may not be as pretty as a factory job and will still require a little minor fitting to work. Here is a picture of one I did a while back.

Very interesting Mark. Didnt know you could do that. What does the gun look like in an overall pic?

Nice modification. Were you able to keep metal heatshield inside handguard?

Here she is, originally a Saiga 7.62 hunting rifle. The stock and pistol grip are Russian AK-100 series purchased from Tantal mounted on the Bulgarian folder trunnion. Folding stock doesn't fold but does detach. Believe it or not, this is one of my most accurate AK's. This was the first AK I built myself and is probably also my favorite. The heat shield required a little trimming, but is there. I have a Soviet laminated stock set for it as well.

The serial number is covered to prevent anyone from reading it and the numbers are hidden on the Form 1 as well. The tax stamp is showing.

Very Nice Mark!

I see that you used a AK-74 brake.

I like the AK-101 stock. Looks great.

Mark, did you encounter any problems building your own krink?

The only "problems" I had were removing the Saiga trigger guard and mag catch assembly housing and installing the AK type trigger guard. That required a lot of Dremel work cutting the old off and slotting the receiver for the pistol grip retaining nut. No problems with the AKSU conversion itself. Just had to wait 80 days for the ATF paperwork.

I used the 74 brake because both types of krinkov compensators are also considered flash hiders by ATF. Not legal for postban SBR.

Mark,

How did you attach the trunion to the receiver? Weld? Rivit?

How did you make the stock removable, instead of folding???

The latch is fixed in place but the pin on the left side is removable. To detach the buttstock, you have to open the receiver cover and then push the retaining pin out the top. Because the factory pin was intended to be permanently installed with a press, and therefore not removeable, mine was made from a nail that was the right diameter and longer than the factory pin.

Great idea!

I used the Bulgarian rivets and installed with a rivet tool purchased from Mike Prewitt and and air hammer. I haven't tried to use a press but I think that may be easier than the air hammer.

Thats just awesome!
Mike Prewitts's idea for the muzzle brake cycles the action well?Hows the reliability with the 7.62 reciever in rapid fire?Maybe that's not an issue with the siaga.
My kit's not here yet but I'm firing off an order for hand guards.
