Hey,all. Just got my Krink kit,5.45,and I have my pre-ban Norinco 84s. Have a manufacturer who will do it,but what's all this "legal" stuff about transfering the truninon numbers to the receivers? Is this required? Seems a lot of you are concerned with this. Could someone explain? Thanks.

All of use are waiting to see it the ATF tech branch will say it is OK. Mike Prewitt sent a letter a couple weeks ago,to the tch branch, about the issue. It could be considered defacing the serial number, and if done and ATF says its a no-no, the gun will be considered contraband.
IMHO, I don't think ATF will approve it. We will see.
Firing line will do you 5.45 on an 84s without changing the trunnion. $200 for labor. refinishing extra.

The only serial number on the PREBAN AK is on a rivetted on piece of metal that has to be removed for the kit to be built and replaced by another piece that has no serial number on it.
So you take your PREBAN rifle and remove the ONLY piece of information that "makes" it a identifiable PREBAN.
Is it legal to transcribe the serial number to the new truninon? What is to stop me from doing this to ANY postban gun(just switch truninons and scribe a new serial number on it.)
There is a letter NOW at the ATF with this question...We are all awaiting for their responce.

Oh,just F...ing great! Guess I jumped the gun there.Wonder what the federales will decide on. Thanks for the info. Any reason why you can't use the orignal trunion already in the gun? Do you have to use the Krinkov trunion? Thanks, all.

If your doner gun is a 7.62 and the Kit you got is a 5.45 then the barrel is too thick to fit into the truninon. I don't know about the same caliber kits...
MY Idea was to cut off the part that has the serial number and the same place on the other truninon, and weld it to the doner truninon...
But some people poo pooed the idea..

Hmmm... someone else may want to send a letter to the ATF as well. From the posts on the Build it Yourself forum, it doesn't look like Mike will be posting anymore.

Why not just pay a machinist or gunsmith to turn (trim) down the barrel shank to fit the chinese trunion? It's not a lot of metal to remove. Then I understand you need to instal a feed ramp in the chinese trunion.Do a site search for this being discused in detail.(instaling feed ramps)
