first of all i know this forum is for ar style weapons, however im a desperate ruger mini 14 ranch rifle owner. i am hoping some one here has some expertise. i got this rifle (like new condition) as a package deal when i bought my carbon 15. i shot maybe 20 rounds, brought in home, cleaned the chamber and the bore, stuck it in a cloth gun case and into the safe it went.

since i am a married man of 20 years, this saturday night was typical, stay home, some tv, some gun fondeling, so i decided to pull out the mini and look it over, play with it, see if my new lula works on its mags. but booooo, i went to pull back the bolt and no go. the action is stuck closed, it appears the safety is stuck, it wont move in either direction and i can open the action to inspect it. ruger manual says open bolt, put on saftey the proceed to open the action. since i cant open it, i cant do much else...

so any ideas, or should i just box it up and send it to ruger?

any help appreciated

done this a time or two. Place a booted foot on the bolt handle with the rifle on the floor pointed at the ceiling. Bring rifle and foot up off the floor about 6", bring them both down shapely. Now, don't bring them down so hard you brake anything, if you don't have a carpet, used a folded up towl under the butt. If that does not work, box it up and ship it to Ruger.;)

I bet the gas port has rusted to the gas piston. It happened to me once.

Sorry, I should have read it closer. Your post says you did open the action therefore the gas piston is not stuck.

Third try.
Somehow I'm just not reading it right.-Too late at night for me.
After the third reading of your post it just might be the gas piston after all.
