I went with Sally to WAlly World today and had to browse the sporting goods. I was sitting there looking and playing with the Henry Golden Boy (again) but all they had was 22 LR and I wanted to try a .17. A friend that was working the counter says look at this Ruger. He pulled out the lever action that looks like a 10/22 at first glance. It was in .17 and I liked it but wasnt ready to buy because I havent done enough study on what to buy yet. I hand it back to him and he hands me a Rem 597 in 17 with a bull barell and the black laminated stock. wow ! I hadnt handled one of these before. I really liked it. The handguards are bigger than the ones on my G-3 !
I let Sally hold it (as some of you know she is getting into rimfires also and loves to shoot). She hands it back and says she likes it too.....So I bought it.
The only thought I have so far is it doesnt have any iron sights so a scope is going to be a must. What do you suggest on power and size ? I want a good scope and was thinking of one of the lower end Nikons for about $100.
Any opinions on what power and size?
I have a straight 4 power on my 10/22 and it has always worked well.
Ok, tell me what I screwed up and how can I make this thing a descent shooter ?
Who sells accessories for it? I know I wont find the mass of stuff for it like a 10/22 .......but I think I am going to like this little rifle....thanks fo an help....

Well, lessee here...:D
I believe Boyd's has some (a?) stock for it and a swim through Brownells' site and Numrich's should be a good start.
I have also heard more than 4X is needed to see the holes at 100yds.
I have a 6.5-20x44mm Simmons M1048 (44 Mag Series) on mine. I like to be able to see where my holes are on the target. This is a nice scope IMO, I have another on my modded 10/22. It has an adjustable objective that focuses very close clearly and it also has target turrets for easy, repeatable adjustments.
I would do it over again. There is also another scope identical to the one I mentioned above with a mil-dot, mine has regular duplex crosshairs which I like better for hunting. I got mine from SWPA for $149.99 (mil-dot $10.00 more).
Get enough scope as this little round makes little holes at long distances! :D

I put a 6-18x42 tasco on mine. It lets you see the mini holes at the 50 yards that we were shooting at.
Word: my 597 is very ammo sensitive and does not like the CCI hollow points. Hornady ammo is no problem. Mags like to be kept clean, and if you fire many rounds, bring a cleaner along. Do not buy the plastic mags, no matter how cheap. They do not work well with the .17HMR.
Good points: the 597 has a nice heft to it and feels more expensive than it is.

thanks guys. I have a 50mm Simmons in the safe somewhere. I cant remember the power on it. I never thought of needing more than a 4 power on a smallbore rifle I guess because I have only used them for small game hunting.
I will go into the safe and see what it is.....
also , where is the cheapest place to buy mags for it and are the 8 round mags the largest they have for them or can we get 25 rounders or so ?
BRB, going to the safe to check a scope...

No high caps...the rifle didn't exist before 1994, so none were produced.

the scope is a 3x9x50 Simmons. I will look around and find a variable scope like a 4x20 or something. Maybe the Guide has something on sale........I never thought I would get back into small bore rifles after I left puberty.....hehe.........lots to learn, not enough time !!!
:jumping: :jumping:
I have a Simmons Whitetail Expedition on my 1022 magnum. I got it from Natchez Shooters Supply fer $150 but now you kin git it fer $135 or something like that. Simmons apparently doesn't make em anymore but Natchez has a supply of em. I really like it and I am not a SImmons fan...been spoiled by Leupy's too much I reckon. Mine is the 4-12AO with target turrets. Very solid feeling scope and really like the c"click" fast eye focus on it.
BTW...I do like that rifle you are talking about. At first I didn't like the look of it but it sure does handle nice, real smooth..
Check ebay for the high cap magazines, a buddy of mine bought a pair of em there but paid top dollar..

Personally, I'd get a nice 4x32 fixed power. No worry about changing point of impact when you change powers. IMHO, that's one of the most irritating things about low priced variables.

alot of good advice from everyone. I found the Simmons 3x9x50 and put it on it for now. I am torn between a fixed power for the reasons Poodleshooter voiced and a 6.5x20x50 Simmons White Tail Classic that BMWGuy is telling me about on another thread and similar to the one Ed40 has on his 10/22.
I did order a new Voltquarsen hammer for it and 3 metal mags last night. Mine shipped with metal mags so that will give me four good magazines. I can always get more later.
Thanks everyone forinput. Please keep it coming. I am in a new realm of guns here.
Give me a black rifle and I can do most anything. These are very new other than plinking with one straight out of the box....

SalBO ... if the 597 in .17 is anything like the .22 lr there are two things you must do.
A Jarvis or VQ hammer, the pull on the 597 is almost child-proof.
The dual guide rail set screws should be loosened and re-tightened to "finger tight" otherwise the rails bow a bit and you'll have a jamming problem.

Thanks,
I got my VQ hammer in the mail today along with 3 more metal magazines. I will check the rail screws when I change out the hammer......

Salbo, I use a Simmons 4-16x50 w/AO on my Marlin V17. I can plainly see the little holes @ 100 yards. I had to put high rings on to keep the objective from hitting the barrel. I also like the target turret knob adjustments. I think I got the scope at MidwayUSA for around $140 on sale. Does what I need it to do.
Enjoy the new rifle.hehe

Just some general comments on scope selection.
I don't care for anything more powerful than 4X for hunting, but I guess that depends on the sort of hunting you're doing. If you're exclusively hunting bullseyes, a higher power makes sense.
As a general rule, for any given price you get a better scope with the scope with the fewest bells and whistles. For that reason, I tend to avoid variables and wide-angle scopes.
.22 scopes generally are parallax-corrected for around 60 yards, centerfire scopes for 100. At any range other than that for with the scope is parallax-corrected a change in the position of your eye releative to the scope means a change in point of impact. Those objective-focussing scopes actually are changing the range at which parallax is corrected, not focussing anything - a very good idea if you plan on using the scope over a wide range of distances.
As a general rule, I consider the price of the weapon to be the ceiling for the cost of the optics. That's a pretty high ceiling, perhaps, but there's nothing more important with a weapon than being able to hit what you're aiming at.
Now, myself, my favorite .22 scope is the out-of-production Redfield 3/4" 4X scope. Unlike other 3/4-inch scopes, it's a very high-quality scope. Redfield still makes steel rings for them, and you can sometimes find the scope on the auction sites. But note that I'm into light handy .22's used for hunting.

Smegma, I dont do any hunting so it is always paper punching anymore from a bench. I am looking at this one.
I wish they would tell a model or something. I cant find it anywhere else. It might be a special one made for the guide, I dont know but it looks good and has turret knobs which I like....any opinions?

Thanks.
Yes it came with it, and as far as I know, no blued models come with the laminate stock. I wish it did, I'd buy one in a NY minute. I like blued rifles over stainless ones.
Here's a little more of the stock.

Can you find out where the two scopes are made? If one was made in Red China and one was not, that would make the deal for me. I try to avoid giving economic support to repressive communist regimes, personal quirk of mine.
Salbo...Call Natchez Shooters Supply, you can get the Expedition scope, 4-12AO, for $135 and the 6-18AO for $150. I love my 4-12. 1-800-251-7839

I ordered the WTC18 last night. BMWguy has seen them and he says they are a nice bright scope even if it is a Simmons. For 99 bucks I thought I would give it a try. I just finished installing a new VQ hammer in it and a Power Custom hammer and spring set in my 10/22.....
Thanks HawkTech !
Both triggers feel better already. I want a new sear and trigger for them now.......hehe, it never ends.......
