View Full Version : What I did to my Tokarev

I removed the funky added safety from my Polish Tokarev that I bought earlier this year. The Safety wasn't originally installed in the gun. It was put in there to meet US import requirements.

After removing the safety I tapped the holes and made two short headless screws and then blued them. I then put red locktite on the two screws and put them in the holes where the safety was.

By removing the safety, I could install the original Russian grips.

Not sure of the legalities of removing the safety from a handgun so modified to allow importation, but that's actually a great idea since the safety wasn't original equipment and there's holes there anyway, and it is an alternative to plugging, welding, grinding and machining.

Could you share the size of screw and thread tap used?

I don't see why this would be illegal, its like how you can't import new AK barrels for building new guns, but if someone builds a new AK using one of these barrels its not illegal?

I think once its in the country the restriction dosent apply? I could be wrong.

I'm not sure, but if I remember correctly, the size of the tap I used was a 10x32. I then took a screw the same size as the tap and took a dremel and cut a screwdriver slot in the end. I then cut off approx a 1/4" length of that screw. I dressed the small screw with a fine file, then 150 grit sandpaper, and then blued it. I did that two times. After bluing it, I simply screwed it into the threaded hole after applying locktite.

I think the entire work took me about 45 minutes. :p

p.s. I still have the removed safety that I could put back in the gun if I wanted to sell it.

I have alot of Tokarev safeties removed, but I have not filled the holes yet.

I almost never use the safety on my Polish TT-33. I use mine the way they were intended to be used, with the half cock. :D -Duffman
