It is legal to own drums for the AK in my state. Does the rifle type make a difference? How about the AR drums?
I bet they cost a pretty penny.

As long as the drum isn't marked "Law Enforcement, Military, Export Only" and dated after Sept '94 they should be legal. They are indeed expensive, the ones I recall being available before the ban were the MWG 90 rounder (probably run about $150 - $200), Norinco 120 round ($200+), and a few Beta C Mags (100 round and will cost $400+). The cited prices are subject to change in our favor come Sept '04 when the AW ban sunsets:ywoot .

You didn't say what state you are from so how can we tell you if they are legal or not.
If they are not marked like bgummer said and you don't live in Kali, NJ, MD or NYC ( and others that I may have missed) then yes they are legal.

STAY AWAY FROM THE PLASTIC MWG DRUMS. THEY ARE TOYS.
The Norinco wind up 120 round is AWESOME and the cheapest quality drum for the AR15. I have one and am kicking myself for not buying 4 of them when they were $95.00 each. Nice thing about wind up is that you can leave it in the gun, loaded, but not wind it up until you need to "R & R". Be VERY careful NOT to over or underwind it, this is done by counting "clicks".

Hi cap mags are indeed legal to own in MD. What is illegal is to transfer a hicap mag in MD. You can own them, you just can't buy or sell them in the state. You can't mail order them either. You can however drive to VA or PA ( or wherever) and buy one.

aint that bulky for a real man. besides, the extra 20rds might save your ass. not bad for $100. prefer the steel chiicom drum over the plastic beta mag. if u get the beta, hope that sucker doesnt jam on you like it is notorious for. and dont drop it, cuz it might crack on u too.
My drum is for sale.
$275 Shipped Conus... Minus the 5 Banned/ Restricted states.
email me : akjunkie@yahoo.com if u are interested.

Actually it seems bulky, but it's not all that heavy, loaded. I would only use it for barricaded survival retreat defense, or entry use in a very dire circumstance, in one of my standard ARs, not my match guns. (You might melt the barrel if you fired all that at once, especially on full auto) It's not a magazine for field carry IMO. Mine has been 100% reliable. They go for way over $100 now however.
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a smaller profile 50 round version made. That would be the cat's meow. I would buy several :killemall

If it's in good shape you got a steal. Was it a private sale or a business that has them for sale? I want at least 1 more for meself and $100 is crazy low :o

Ohio has a 30 round limit on magazines! So, anyone with a M11/9 and it's 32 round mag are breaking the law. :p

It's a 31 rnd limit in Ohio.. and you can get a high capacity ammunition feeding device permit for $5 as I recall.

AC_Pilot, the guy had it behind one of those slanted glass look but don't touch showcases. He had a small collection of AR parts and some stuff that I didn't recognise. When I saw the drum, I almost died. It had 2 tags on it, one said AR-15 100 round drum, the other said $100. The money was in my hands so fast it looked like I never reached for my wallet. He said that he used the drum once, but with all the oil and grease inside, and the slime outside, I can't believe he used it much. When I got home, I cleaned it out and dumped in 120 rounds. I can't believe I got it for that price. Here it is on my home built AR:

I would have stood there and tried to outbid you! :p You got a near new Norinco 120 rounder for 100 bucks! Like Rod Stewart sang, some guys have all the luck. Well, at least I have one such drum. Be careful not to melt yer barrel with that puppy :duece:
I use lacquer thinner to remove the cosmoline on/in AK style mags, then I spray dry lube on the internals, and wipe synthetic motor oil on the outsides, but wipe it off with a clean cotton rag after it sets a bit.

What do those 120rd drums usually sell for? I can't find any listed anywhere.
I've sold a couple(NIW) for $275.00 each, back in '99 or '00, but hadn't seen any since. I would think they've appreciated since then. Wouldn't they be worth 1/2 of what a Beta mag would bring? Thanks!

I've seen them for auction in the $250 to $350 range, but no bids. They are only worth what people are willing to pay. I think you did good, wildmann43!
Norinco drums unfortunately are not affected by the sunsetting ban in September because all stuff from China is banned. European drums will flood the market, and hopefully Beta C-mags will come down to semi-reasonable levels.

IF, and I say, IF, boy (a little Foghorn leghorn lingo) the AWB is sunsetted, then the fully enclosed drum mags will come in big time. They are still available now for $80 to $100
It's kinda a love/hate with the Romanian ones because they are such a hassle to load/unload. But overall with all the people I have seen who do not know how to safely operate the wind ups, maybe they are a better way to go. Personally I just bought 12 more Bulgarian plastic waffles and some Sten mags and I am gonna buy more if they are nice. I think the ban will be renewed
