I have a RRA lower and a Model 1 kit. After most of the parts a assembled, I find out that the hole for the Selector switch is not big enough for the selector detent to fit in to. I had to get another Take Down detent to use for that hole. Is this normal?
The hole for the selector detent looks like a guide bit hole. It has a smaller hole all the way through, which fits the Takedown Detent fine. And the outer part which the Selector Detent will fit in, untill it gets to the smaller hole.
Can I use the gun like this? Switch seems to function fine. I might go shoot it tomorrow and findout. Should I drill out the hole to make the Selector Detent fit?

Just use drill bits to clean up the holes. Chances are that the step cut end is slightly burred, and causing the problem.
Remember to not deepen the larger hole step cut, just to clean up the burs on the surfaces of the stepped hole.

I looked again, and the smaller hole is simply way too small for the Selector Detent. It needs to be drilled out 2 sizes bigger to even fit the detent.
I might take it by a gun smith and let them have a look.
Thanks...

You are using the correct detent pin? The tip of the pin is smaller than the collar that retains the pin in the hole (step cut) if the selector is remove with out removing the pistol grip.

I do know it is a Step Cut Dano523. I checked again to make sure and used a small round file to deburr the smaller hole to no avail.
The smaller hole is simply too small to fit the Selector Detent, and I am back to using the Take Down Detents. I might just drill it out.

Ok, just got back from the range. Now I am more Pissed than ever. This is a Model 1 upper kit with a RRA lower.
The selector works fine but the gun jammed so bad I had to completely dis-assemble the gun to free the bolt(Bent the casing of a live round)
It did it again later, and tried to put 2 bullets in to the barrel at the same time... Time to dis-assemble again and clean and do some looking.

Chances are the back of the hammer (tail) is binding up on the disconnector. Look for a white line just behind the hook on the disconnector. If you have signs of the hammer tail making contact with the back of the disconnector, you need to remove .040 off the tail to allow it to be lowered father when the carrier is coming back to re-cock the hammer.

This one is mag related. If you are running SA-80 or USGI mags, then the mag (s) is on the way out and needs to be replaced. If you running clone mags (read cheap USA) put them under your car tire, and then run them over. The clone mags are made out of thin metal, which caused the feed lips to spread open and double feed rounds. If you don't believe me, fully load one of the clone mags, then give the bottom of the mag a sharp blow to a toweled surface. The mag will spray the rounds out of it and is what is happening when the buffer makes contact with the back of the receiver extension.
P.S. Looks like my home site is back up, so if you need to find me, I’ll be posting over there.

I'm new here so I'll just jump right in with my opinion. I, too, had problems with the selector detent from a Model "1" lower kit and a RRA lower. What I found was that the hole on the lower is the correct size but the Model "1" detent was oversize. I picked up another brand detent and it dropped right in and works fine now. I suppose you could try to file/sand the oversize pin to size but to me for the few cents it cost for a new one it wasn't worth the time and effort.

Thanks, Bigmtnman. I tried going by my local Gun shop to get another detent but their Smith was already gone. Will try again tomorrow.
Very interesting, I dont see why they would make an over-size for something that sees basicly no wear or stress.

I finally got to try another detent from a local Gun Shop. Same results as the Model-1 detent included in their kit. I guess I need to drill the receiver out a bit more to accept the detent.

Timanator,
Call RRA and see if they can send you a detent. I have built a number of RRA lowers with a variety of lower parts kits, and the only trouble I have ever had was a selector that needed deburring. IMHO the liklyhood that the hole is the culprit is less than the possibility that the pins were to blame.
Do you have any friends with ARs that will let you compare parts and lowers? That might be a start too. Before you start modifying the lower, get with RRA. That should be their job to get it right, and if you or your smith booger it, you just got yourself one fine paperweight.
Since you are in Texas, what part are you in? If you are in the Houston area, I'd be happy to take a look at it. I am a Colt armorer (but I prefer RRA). Let me know if I can help.

I fixed the problem by just opening the hole a bit bigger with a dril bit.

HEHEHE...... looks like we share at least TWO hobbies :D
I own Saleen # 91-0065 which is the only white coupe made that year. I suppose you know Kelly Pierce don't you? He's in the west side mustang club and owns a saleen as well I think. Maybe a 1988.
Glad you got your AR squared away. Let me know if you run into any more hitches.

Yes, Kelly emailed me today as a matter of a fact.
What range do you shoot at? Maybe we can meet up and shoot/ talk cars sometimes.

I usually go to Bayou Rifles in Juliff TX. It's a private club with a range up to 300 yards. I can bring visitors if you want to go sometime.
Shoot me an email with your contact information and I'll give you a shout next time I go if it isn't impromptu.
