does anyone out there have a favorite configuration for tactical/defense? i am thinking of a knights ras, eotech 551 i scout position, otal laser(Offset tactical aiming laser, or something) w/ pressure pad, and last but not least a trijicon night site set. sound decent? any critiques or suggestions or just let me know your own setup for comparison? thanks.:D :D :p :p

It sounds decent but what about a light? My best dressed AR is a Sendra M4gry. It has a Phantom FS on a Bushmaster 14.5" barrel, a Surfire 500a with IR filter, USNV 440 scope and Corsak IR laser. I also use headmounted NV so that is why I have the IR laser. It's pretty much just a back up in case the scope pukes. I hope to be replacing the Corsak soon with something a little better.
If you don't want to put a lot of money into a Surefire, you could tape a Mag lite to the handguards if you have too. I've seen that done before.

Wont the tape melt from barrel heat and then you have a big skicky mess to clean up?

I am not sure on the brand, but there is one tape the military uses on the barrels which are safe to use in high temp applications. It comes in the desert camo and regular forest camo.

personally, I think just a good optic in a low power would be perfect and enough.
Maybe free float the barrell if you sling up to shoot.
The RAS and all the other wizbang gizmos look to have many places for debris. twigs and such to enter and snag, plus they are fairly sharp, when I picked up a couple/few multi rail interface systems I noticed (out loud) the huge amount of sharp edges. Not so sharp to cut you but when things get moving fast it could easily cut flesh. One of my smart assed friends said as an abn ranger such things shouldn`t bother me :D
I told him it`s because of that I know what will happen cuz it`s happened before.
Of course no one wants to hear the system that all the gizmo manufacturers hail as having a NSN number and "in use by our spec op teams around the globe" and you run out to purchase and install.................but notice that most of the pics from afghaniland and iraq........are simple rifle systems sans the wizbang gizmo`s.
Anyone notice the 100 mile an hour tape used by basic infantry units on the IR lasers and the M16/4.
I reckon the rifle is being used as a target indicator more than a rifle. If you need a target undicator then the RAS is for you.
My radio doesn`t have some airdale types wqaiting for my call so I have no need for all the twig catching bs that makes a lightweight carbine into a heavy, unbalanced twig catching gizmo platform.

But if you want to look cool...................well that`s a different topic.

As far as optics go any decent scope in 1-5 power range would be about perfect as the ballistics of said cartridge is only good for medium range engagments.
I opted for the Trijicon Accupoint in 1.5-4 power variable. Cheaper than the bigger acogs with all the features yet this one will allow you to power down to use as a true red dot with both eyes open

the Army wanted a new system

Notice the lack of mud flaps and whip antenenas?
I have only handeled that rifle and all I can do is hope it will come available soon to us.
very handy, very smooth, very ergo.
breaks down easy, cleans easy, they say it`s dead nuts reliable....

the reason for the ras is for a mounting platform. the laser is for fun factor. i know i am a poser.:) the biggest reason for the ras is to use a forward grip. i love how carbined ar's handle with them. i looked into first samco and others, but the ras looks/feels more solid. i haven't shot w/ an eotech, but was fortunate enough to handle a gun with said mounted to it and i'm sold as far as speed of acquisition. indeed looks are valueable to me. definate poser status.;)

the xm8 looks slick. i wonder if we will ever get a chopped down civilian version?
