According to the Officer Down Memorial website, www.odmp.org we have lost
141 brothers and sisters this year. The list of top cop killers are
combined automobile accidents, automobile assaults, and pursuits. But the
number one killer this year was gunfire. Forty-five of our brother and
sister officers died at the hands of a killer with a gun. It is important
for us to remember those that have made that ultimate sacrifice. These are
our war stories, our history, and we must learn from them and honor them.
Law enforcement officers cannot afford for history to repeat itself. That
is why we learn from each other, and from the legacies left behind by those
we have lost.
