Hi, guys. I usually don't browse this forum but I'm curious about having a Polish AK kit built. I have a question about receivers. Specifically, how do you suggest getting a US receiver?
Receivers transfer just like firearms, as the receiver is the gun by law, right? So how come when I called FFL's and asked about one I ran into a brick wall. "I can't do that. Liability," blah, blah, blah. I found one guy who would, but he gave me a big lecture about illegal machine guns and 10 yrs. in jail.
Have I just not found the right FFL or what? Any advice you guys could give me would be appreciated.

Have you contacted OOW and asked if they have a FFL holder on file somewhere?
Or here is another option.
You can purchase you polish kit.
Contact whoever you are gonna have build your kit.
Have him/her receive the receiver for your.
Then all you have to do is find someone to handle a complete gun.
Now, the drawback is that you have to go thru the hassle with a complete gun.
If you find someone to handle a receiver transfer then your builder can send your gun back to you complete.

Contact Chris at AK-USA ( WWW.AK-103.COM ) If you buy the Polish PMKMS kit from Global Trades he can build it on a Ohio Ordnance receiver. He does excellent work. He built mine and I'm very happy with it.

Thanks for the tips. I assumed a builder would insist on having the receiver supplied w/the kit. If he'll get the receiver that solves my "You're going to build a machine gun!" problem.
Do you guys both recommend the OOW receiver? I've read here that the selector hole is in the wrong spot. Should I try to have this fixed or go with another mfr.? If so, who else makes AK receivers?

It's not really a problem. I just got mine back from Chris. Send me an email and I'll send you a picture.

Have you thought about building it yourself? Really doesn't take a lot of tools or experience. Just careful work, a bit of reading and some time.
As for a receiver, you can bend your own, buy a semi-build or a complete receiver. OOW, Vulcan (both with their problems) are out there, Global will be shipping their's soon (trunions will need to be shaved but should be 1 stiff unit). Read the 'Build it Yourself' forum for some good info on building.
Now for the FFL's in your area ... Do you look like some kind of drug dealer or other lower form of life? I know it shouldn't matter if you're of legal age but .... And I too got a bit of a lecture about 'full auto' from my FFL, and I've bought several weapons there already. Just tell them you're aware that all weapons of this type must conform to current NFA standards and if you could aford the $250,000 fine you'd buy a Full Auto if you wanted one. Try looking here: http://ak-47.net/dealer/states/dflorida.html to see if there's a FFL close by.

I found one guy who would, but he gave me a big lecture about illegal machine guns and 10 yrs. in jail.Did the guy say "that's illegal, but I'll do it anyway", because if he did, I would be EXTRA leery of him.

What part of FL do you live in? If you are near me, Tampa Bay area, I can recommend an excellent gun dealer who has handled several orders for me.

I don't think I'd have the patience to try a build of my own. I'm a hammers and pry bars kind of guy. Also, I'd hate to have the thing blow up in my face.
I'm a totally respectable looking guy. Not the anti's stereotypical toothless inbred "gun nut," or gold chain wearing pimp/drug dealer type. I think the "full auto!" lecture was the standard reply.
Wouldn't it be nice if we had our Second Amendment rights back and didn't have to deal with all this BS? I'd walk in the gun store plop down a few hundred bucks and walk out with an unmolested full auto AK. Maybe someday, but I don't hold out much hope.

You may want to try The Firing Line (http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/firingline/) for an absolutely fantastic receiver. The can install the barrel and head space, you finish the rest. I am really proud of mine. Jack

If you are a hammer and pry-bar kind of guy then you can build an AK, its not rocket science. Nor will a homebuild blow up in your face, the critical parts are part of the kit, and not what you do assembling the rifle. Join us in the build forum here.

The biggest problem with roll your own is heat treatment. It sounds like a fun project with a fully formed reciever. Outside of the barrel install and headspace, it doesn't sound too bad. I would go with a Firing Line with the barrel installed. The rest is cake.
