I don't know much about ARs but I am getting a gift for someone. He wants steel 40 rounders.....who makes good reliable steel mags in 40s? Thank you all in advance!

The only steel 40s that work reliably that I have found are British Sterling Armalite 40 round mags. Unfortunately they are not easy to come by and I know of know source at the moment. I would recommend watching the gun auction sites, and keeping an eye peeled at gunshows for them (they are marked "Sterling Britain" on the floorplate). The U.S. aftermarket 40 round mags are, by and large, junk.

There is a guy over on ar15.com that goes by screen name of "ComputerGuy" and he has the Sterling 40 rounders for sale.

The 40rd AR-15 mags tend to be a lot more than the military
30rd mags, if you can find them....I have a couple and they
feed and work well, but they prevent a good prone shooting
postion(they stick out too far).....stick with the 30rd mags, you'll
save money.......wish I had friends who would buy me mags!!!
