Got my PMKMS build done. Just got it back from the shop (sorry no pics yet). The rifle is totally awesome. I came across a problem though and I don't know how to handle it. It functions flawlessly and is as accurate as I am. Well here is the problem... while no doubt it was professionally assembled, I was screwing around with the "fixed" underfolder and not knowing anything about this thing I started probing around and I pushed what looked like a button on the side and then it happened. The stock FOLDED. Now before things get out of hand here... I took the dust cover off and looked inside and I see where they welded it with a spot weld but it doesnt really do anything, its just there, ya know.
My question is... does the romanian underfolder have any differences to the polish one ? Maybe they fixed it according to a Romanian ? Hell I don't know. What should I do about this ? Should I tell them they did not fix the stock right and send it back to them ? Or should I just box it up and keep it away till september (would be a waste to not shoot it till then). I know that I shouldnt post this here but I am confused as to what to do, I have only had the rifle for a week and I just noticed this.
Thanks for any input.

I'd personally use it, and just not fold it while you're out at the range or transporting it. If for some reason you are asked about it, just tell the people who ask about your rifle it's a postban that has been spot welded fixed, and don't fold it up. If you are struck by lightning while being attacked by a 50 foot great white and some LEO wants to look at it, and they fold it, express your surprise, show them the weld, and have it sent back to the manufacturer.

I make light of the LEO situation simply because I have never been approached by anyone, ever, on a public range, and asked if my guns were prebans or postbans. If others have had differing experiences, please speak up and offer advice. But again, I personally wouldn't do anything, and simply wait for the sunset. Playing stupid really works too; It's gotten me through high school and 12 years of marriage! ;)

Playing dumb doesn't always work, especially if it's a weapon. But don't despair .... there's an easy fix.

If you remove the pin from the left 'locker' inside the receiver(hold the release in slightly), the release button and it's spring will come out. Either replace the spring with a piece of thin wall tubing (but the button will rattle a bit) or cut a 1/4" section or so (enough to keep the latch from releasing and the stock folding), place under the spring and reassemble. Law says (as I understand) it can't fold without the use of tools, and you're going to need something to pull that pin out.

C_Kassidy,

Where'd you get your build done? I have a PMKMS underfolder kit as well and I was thinking of doing it myself but I probably won't have time this semester.

Which receiver did you use and how do you like it?

:ak:

Cammer,
I had my build done by Ohio Rapid Fire (http://www.ohiorapidfire.com/) . I usually get all my work done there as Todd and the rest of them are very friendly and they do awesome work. I just had it built on an Ohio Ord receiver cos thats what Todd had in stock when I got there to give him my kit. I am thinking of giving him another to build for me as well. That moly over park finish is outstanding. I wish I had a decent digi cam.

I agree with you. ORF has customer service that rivals anyone that I have EVER done business with, even outside the firearms industry. Prices are right too.

I didn't know they worked on AKs. All my business with them has been related to my 1919A4 build (still in progress). I'll probably have them do the millwork on the 1919. I can't seem to find anyone local who I'd trust to do it right.
