Went to estate sale this morning where I missed out on a WWII German paratrooper jacket (went for $175) and this made me think about an Arisaka a friend offered to sell me last year. So I called him up.
boyfriend of an aunt brought it back from WWII. He picked it up in Hawaii. It's a long rifle (friend says he can't imagine some jap soldier lugging this thing around) Mum is intact, good rifling, blue is good, stock has seen action. cleaning rod is there. aircraft sight. May or may not be a monopod he wasn't sure what something was. Don't think shroud is intact. No idea of production year or factory. Could someone ballpark what I should offer him if all above holds true?

Also, what does WWII navy blues go for? hat, shirt, peacoat, officer's coat, white shirt etc? This stuff was at the estate sale and I had no idea what was a good price

$100-$150 for the rifle?

Sound's like a decent type 99, you did say anti-aircraft sight. I would go 150 to 200.

It's hard to say without seeing it, but I'd say $200 tops and that would have to be in pretty primo shape.
Just my cheapass opinion though...

Thanks. Also has original sling and wood chit that was attached to trigger guard. My guess is either a dog tag or rack chit

I'm going over to his tomorrow to take a look at it. I'll make an offer and see what he'll take if it's all he described. Hopefully he'll show me where the gun connects as two pieces (paratrooper -in my dreams lol)

then you tell hem that it's broken and you'll take it off of his hands for 30 dollars

lol. I'm not out to screw him. It will be fun to see what he approximates the value at though. My luck he'll be cruising gunbroker or auction arms and looking at the ones that never go to get his value. Eh, we'll see

Nice looking rifle. No aircraft sights. Wood in good appearance, bluing excellent, dark bore with strong rifling, Might be pitting might not, metal all looks good. Some minor minor rust on mag floor plate and the biggie is a crack in the stock from butt to trigger guard that looks like it has been there along time, You don't even notice but it will probably need to be pinned. I've heard that this is common in Arisakas. I told him I had asked the board and it was suggested 150 to 200 here. He had talked to a dealer about it and suggested 150 which means he'd been lowballed in my opinion. Oh and MUM is fully intact as well. There was a wood chit I need to get translated for him so unless it's somethingg like Hirihito's personal rifle it's a done deal

If it's a Type 99 is should have a chrome bore. AFAIK the buttstock on a lot of these was spliced to make better use of the available lumber.

That's it on the splice. I kept looking at it thinking it was arsenalled. So if I get it I don't need to do anything to it then? Sweet.

this is a bad pic but if this is the crack your talking about.this is normal for a Type 99

Depending on the type 99, you may have a chrome lined bore or you may not, and that include's the face of the bolt to.

Now if the two peice buttstock crack is really big, you might want to use a 2x4 .:D :p
Guinny, it sounds like a good deal for 150. It may or may not have a chromed bore. Late in the war, they quit chroming them to get them in service quicker. The intact mum is a plus. I have seen more with that stock splice than without, I think it was standard to splice them. Even my type 38 long rifle is spliced. Mine are accurate, but I hand load for them since Norma ammo is so expensive. You can make brass for them out of 8mm mauser or 30-06. You can also pull the bullets and powder from surplus 8mm, resize the necks to 7.7 and reload them, leaving the original primer in.
I just reread your first post. If you have a long rifle, you may have a type 38. Is it 7.7 or 6.5?

It's definately not a carbine. bolt release is the Mauser side release. I didn't see any markings indicating the caliber. I'll have it in possession this week I figure

Well i am not sure what you have Guinny. Since it doesn't have anti-aircraft sight's i wouldn't go higher than 150, the mum sure is a plus. Now if it is a type 38 ,150 would be a great price.
