Which one do you prefer:

The 1891 (the original Russian model)?
The M-44 Carbine:
The M-39 (from the North Country)?
The M-91 made in the USA (Remington or Westinghouse)
One of the other models?

Polish M44. It's the best made of the Mosin's. Any of the shorter rifles (M38 or M44) leave you bruised and battered, because they're lighter thus more recoil. I have fun having one hammer my shoulder. They also create nice fireballs.

I've owned them all from a 1892 M91 to a 1970 M39, with a spattering of dragoons, M24 stepped, P26, M27, M28, M28/30, M39, M91/30, 91/59, and M44's, about every thing except a M38 and a 1907 (smile). I like shooting the M39 for stock fit and sights but my heart still goes out to my matching finn capture M91/30 1939, my first mosin and still the best. For some strange reason I am looking for a nice M38.

It's a toss-up between my 91/59 and my Polish M44. My next Mosin will be either a M38 or a Finn Mosin.

Gun has b een used on two different sides, mebbe 3,
of wars, some of them started gun-life in the late 1890's,
updated and accuraized by the Finns in WWII.
They look pretty cool. (have to admit the M-44 is awefully ugly).
Can mount a scope (on the rear site mount) and deer hunt with it.
So can your kids, and their kids, long after you're gone.
What a gun, I'm glad they brought some over in time for
me!
Maybe I'll get a few more.

It's gotta be the M-44, Russkie manufacture. Any rifle that gets more accurate with the bayonet on and extended gets my vote.

Tough decision between the M44 and the M39, my friend has an M39 and it is of very good quality. My M44 looks great and shoots great though..

My 91/59, its the most accurate, it not as awkward as the 91/30s, and no bayonet to mess with like the M44s.

Yes Shawn, I too feel the M39 Fin is best of the Mosin Nagant world. Hey do you have one of the Inter Ordnance M89 repo bayonets yet? They are pretty good looking, wood could fit a bit better on the grips but, it looks reasonable in quality for what a military bayonet should look like. The one I have came unsharpened, so I've yet to sharpen it and see what the steel quality is like. It comes with a rivet reinforced gray green leather sheath. Sort of a bowie point design.

Dear Fellow Members-OTS,but Dennis Kroh was selling M-39 Repro bayos w/ sheaths for around $100.00.These are Chinese replicas, but VERY nice.Fit and finish are superb.Locked in solid on my VKT.
Back to the poll, the BEST Mosin-Nagant is my 1915 SA marked Tula M1891.Not because she is the most accurate (2-3 inches at 300 feet),but because she required the most TLC.Had to buy the barrelled action from Rick Reich ,refinish a 1916 Sestroryetsk stock and buy a TAPCO repro cleaning rod for her. These guns are SWEET when they look brand new-and I have 7 Mosin-Nagants:)My .02 worth-Gearhead

I only have experience with the Russian M-44, and the M-39, but I like the M-39. A lot more accurate, nicer finish work on the parts, and feels like a rifle. Plinking at 100 yards with surplus Russian ammo I had a nice fist size group after shooting and shooting and shooting. Capable of more I know. Can't beat if for fifty bucks.

Ezra Coli

Well, my 2 cent isn't worth the zinc its stamped in, but here it is anyway...

I have a sweet M44, Russian, beautiful with 95-100% Blue, perfect bore, ect... Its my favorite shooter because it has little collector value as far as Mosins go. But it isn't the best Mosin. The Finn M-39 I used to have, before I sold it off not realizing what I was doing :( was heavier (read: less felt recoil), a bit sturdier, better built, smoother, all around much more accurate, and it was only in VG condition. It was a nice warm colored B barrel too, can't believe its gone (didn't know jack about them then, just bought it cause it was there).

But, if the M-44 was THE best, why can you buy a nearly NEW M44 for $50, and you can hardly get a junker M-39 for the same dough? Most decent condition M-39s are around $70-100 these days. Sure, there were more M44s made, more recently, and the M39s are more collectible, but the Finn guns have the reputation that people pay for, seek out, and generally go crazy over. Heck, even a Finn M91 is a better gun that a native M91. Seems the Finns had higher standards, no?

I love my M44, don't get me wrong. Its a literal blast to shoot. Ugly as sin on steroids, but sweet shooting and an eye opener on the range. But my vote goes to the Finns, hands down.

I have a Polish M44 and two M39's a Sako SK.Y and a VKT . Even though I like carbines allot something about having to fix bayonets to get it to shoot right bothers me . Probably because with the bayonet out it's just as long as a rifle thus defeating the beauty of a carbine .Of the two 39's I would have to say I like my Sako the most . I am going with the 39's .

1891/30's - but they probably should have all had the bayonets fixed. No one had their bayonet on the rifle.

Some sources say that Jude Law's character was using a model 1891, but I couldn't see any difference between it an an 1891/30 sniper version... I could be wrong though...

I prefer the original M91s
None ofthe other rifles have nearly the history, nor the 'crude elegance' that the M91s have. I have 3 M91s, 4 91/30s and no others, altho I do need some of the more uncommon variations and an M38, but have no urge to own an M44. (I think it's the bayonet LOL)

I would have to go w/ the Russian M38. Short and handy. Mine shoots into

Most people vote for what they have, not really wanting to give the nod to something they don't have, or they just think their stuff is best. You know how it is with polls.

Seeing that the Finns are the most expensive Mosins, it follows that the cheaper ones are more plentiful and so would win a poll.

That said, I love the finns, but I really love the older original 91s, for the history. If its a Finn rework of an oldie, all the better.

Of The 3 Mosins I Own I Would Have To Give The Nod To My M-38.

AKMS
11-06-2005, 10:03 AM
My favorite is the Chinese Type-53 Carbine version of the Russian M-1944 Carbine. I finally found one after a long search, that was made in 1956, the Year I was born. The Type-53 is the only M-44 Made in 1956, and only Mosin-Nagant Period! that was made in that year. I was very lucky to find one just in Good Condition, with 75%Plus Blueing and most rare of all in a 1956 Gun, all Matching Number's. very happy. The Type-53 was the last of the Mosin-Nagant's, after a 3 year break, they came back to make it one more year in 1960. According to the Guy I got it from, Don Bell of Omega Weapon's in Tucson, Ariz. Execpt for the 1960 Made's Type-53's, which had been made for mostly Export only! The Chinese had buried the lot of them in the Ground, and dug them up in the Early 80's to sell them to Navy Arm's, and other's during the time they were starting to sell AK' s and SKS Carbine's, Tokarev and Makarov Pistol's. That is why so many are found with mis-matched Bolt's, as the Bolt's were buried seperately, and the Chinese did not want to rematch up all the Numbered Bolt's to the Carbine's. Add to that, the fact that only 54,000 1956 Type-53's were made, you can see how happy I am to find a all matching Gun. They were started in Jan, 56 at the 4 million range, and were made for just 2 Month's, reason for this is, that year, the SKS and AK were coming out, which mean's with my Serial Number of: 4045481 mine was made in February, 1956. I was born on 8 April, 1956, this is my keeper, I am happy to say I am in better shape than the Carbine. Paul

I've only got my M38 to go by, so that's what gets my vote. I plan on getting a 91/30 at the beginning of the year from my buddy's dad's shop in Logan, WV. I'll recast my vote after that.

I've also got 2 questions for anyone who may be able to help:

1) Is there an offset scope mount available for the 91/30 that would save the trouble of modifying the stock?

2) Does anyone know of any place to find Hungarian 7.62x54r? I hear it has a catchy, eye-pleasing white flash.

You can get scope mounts that replace the rear sight. Fairly easy to install, no permanent modification to rifle.

Aimsurplus has the yellow tip, plus you'd be supporting a board sponsor.

91/30. My '39 Tula is a tack driver, not to mention so sweet and smooth to fire.

What is the best Mosin-Nagant? A question like that is enough to make your mind melt down and your brains leak out of your ears. I love then all. I have more Mosin-Nagants that anything else. My Finnish M39 shoots the best out of all of them with my M27 a close second. My 91/30s will keep pace with a 98K and I really like the looks of the ones with laminated stocks. I have a 91/30 sniper that is a real joy. I feel like I go back in time every time I shoot it. Then the carbines. I love the carbines. M44 are cheap, accurate, handy and point very well. Again, I like the looks of the ones with laminated stocks. My Polish one is a beauty and my Hungrian one has a personality of its own. M38s have all the qualities of the M44 but are balanced just right. M91/59s are just different enough from the M38s that it makes them truely unique, and rare enough the be real jewels. I can't pick which is the best. They all are.

mostly the 91/30 types, although if I saw right some of the soldiers on board one of the boats had M-44's.

My favorite is the M-44 types, get some of that polish steel core stuff and that shit puts out one helluva fire ball pretty much every shot, and the boom has to make one of the deepest boom I've ever heard.

91/30 is next on my list though.
