I just received the translation of the dogtag that was tied to the rifle. Here's the response:
The picture of the chip is obviously a name tag.
Without knowing the actual size of it, it's difficult to tell if it is for a
body ( a dog tag ) or for a thing ( a bag, chest, etc.).
The chit shows three set of letters or three words.
The first word on the right reads " suicho " which means in Japanese " Chief
Sailor". The second word from right or in the center reads " Matsumura ", a
not-so-uncommon Japanese surname. The word on the left is entirely
illegible. There is a very small possibility that I would be able to read it
if I saw the actual chit.
Sorry, but this is all I can tell.
I was very fortunate in that I was able to locate the St. Louis Japanese Society at UMSL and their Chairman was very gracious to do the translation. This was the only thing holding back the sale of the rifle. Woohoo, I'm very excited
