Don't know anything about it other than the Mum is intact and I can't find a serial. It came with the sling and the dog tag tied to the trigger guard (well it use to be but it came off before I took it into possession). Tell me what you think. What calibre?

I got no idea what type it is, but it looks cool and getting the dog tag with it makes it awesome!

I need your help on the sling. Very precarious. I'm afraid of flaking leather, pain that's on the back of the sling (see the rear site shot). Any suggestions greatly appreciated

OK, you have a Type 38 so it's 6.5mm.

The markings under the 'mum read from top to bottom:
3
8
Type

If you'll look on the left side of the receiver (IIRC) you should find a number and some funky looking markings. If so, can you shoot and post em?

Also I need a couple of good shots of the safety knob, rear sight and front sight.

I can match them up to what's in my book and see exactly what you have...

1. It looks to be a 6.5 Japanese type 38 rifle. I have two but not quite as in as original shape. Im not exactly sure of the type number though and will double check.

Wow what nice wood on a jap! really mint:)

I'm not sure that it's not a type 38 i will have to dig mine out and check sure look close based on my usually faulty memory :(

I have had great luck on using some thing called neetfoots oil

i seem to put moisture back into the leather i have used it on some really old leather.

Great find ! good luck!

Awesome Awesome Awesome. There is some mild surface rust and sure enough it's on that # (serial?)

on the left side of the barrel where it screws into the receiver, there's a forward Arrow in a circle and a S.

What exactly on the front site, rear site are you looking for? and what is the safety knob?

You have an early type 38 , you can tell by the large tang on the safety and no front site protectors, of course the caliber is 6.5.I will give you some more info later Guinny, i got to get to bed.

Okey dokey...here we go!:D

I dinna see your rear sight pic when I posted so that's already bee answered.

Does the front sight have ears on each side or is the blade exposed?

The safety knob is that big, knurled thing at the end of the bolt. Push in with the palm of your hand and turn one way to put on safe, turn the other to take off safe.

The # should have some markings close by. Either a combination of circles or a star of some sort. The forward arrow/S doesn't match anything I have, let me see what I can dig up....

Courtesy of the Banzai website. These are data research sheets they are compiling to get more info on the specific series changes, etc.

I'll find my link to the Baznai website and put it in here too.

Wow you got me psyched.. The front sites are open. No ears. Going over those sheets, the answers I'm sure of are all A. Tokyo arsenal. Some places there are no stamps. What's that webpage?

Oh, theforward arrow was #4 on your sheet

There is no series symbol and my serial is 880,XXX (very low in those Xs). So I'm assuming :

38 Koishikawa (Tokyo) none 0-2,029,000 (see Note 1) 1906-ca.1935

Koishikawa switched from "B" to "S" barrel proof mark in the late 800,000 serial number range. (this is interesting because I have the S on mine)

Sweet. Thanks Alice in Chains. So was right in guessing mine then? I did go with the handout which I found again at Banzai (thanks AWP).

So the bolt body was polished? It has spots of blue but I couldn't decide whether it was blued or that was tarnish.

Also, their is a social security # written in ink on the bottom of the gun. Did they use SSs for bringbacks?

aliceinchains

Hard to say on the bolt, gun could have been rearsenaled.

Here is a pic of my receiver, i have an S code barrel. The bolt is blued and doe's match the number with the front band but doe's not match the receiver.

Believe me I'm thankful. I'm searching right now how to treat leather dry rot for the sling. Just read Neatsfoot oil is actually harmful to leather as a preservative.
