The word "routine" is a dangerous word because in law enforcement/protective service, there is no such thing as a "routine" anything. More than 70% of the time, fatal confrontations erupt during so-called "routine patrol," and especially when officers are doing one of these four things:
Attempting arrests
Responding to domestic disturbances
Investigating robberies in progress, and
Conducting traffic stops
Also keep in mind that "day patrol" is not necessarily safer than "night patrol". Unfortunately officers are killed in all kinds of weather, inside and outside of buildings/squads and any time of day.
Officers must remain alert at all times and prepared for any eventuality. Go home at the end of each day.
