A guy wants to sell me two Argentine Mausers in 7mm with all the original markings.
Can anyone fill me in on what we have here? I've never had a Mauser, but I have seen some in bad shape and these are excellent with shiny bores.
What are they, and what's a good price?
Thanks for any help. :)

Are we talking truly "excellent"?? bores, bluing and wood? Are you sure they are Argentine? I would think they would be in 7.65mm. If so are they 1909's or 1891's?
I know, lots of questions, but I would like to give you a pretty accurate value.

Well, since I don't know much about Mausers all I can recall is that they have the straight bolt. He said he thinks they are 7mm. Is a 7.65mm considered an 8mm?
But the bores look flawless with a borelight. And all the markings are intact with near perfect bluing. I assume that indicates that someone reblued them? He said they were Argentine, but when I looked for an Argentine forum I didn't see one.
He says his dad was a collector and he inherited them. The year 1916 rings a bell. But for all I know I could have made that up.
I'll find out more. I wasn't even sure if Argentine Mausers existed.

The argentines are 7.65 which uses a .310-.311 bullet.
Do you recall if the magazine extends below the stock and is single stack? That would be a 1891, if flush, it is a 1909. Both are very nice rifles.
Just my opinion, but I consider the pre-WWI south american contract mausers to be the nicest for fit, finish and construction if made in Germany by either Ludwig Loewe or DWM, the actual argentine constructed mausers are a step below. You'll want to check that.
I've got four of them varying in condition from very good to excellent. I wouldn't automatically assume them to be reblued. The 1909 should be finished bright on the receiver while the 1891 will be blue.
Best of luck,
Steve G.

The 1891 Argy Mauser is a small ring receiver and will cock on closing of the bolt, the receiver will be blued, and the single stack magazine will protrude below the stock something like a Carcano. If the crest is not ground off the receiver ring, grab it. Most were ground. The 1909 Argy Mauser is a large ring receiver that was issued in the white from the factory in Berlin. It also cocks on opening of the bolt like a 98 Mauser, and the mag floor plate is flush with the stock and will be hinged when opened by a release lever in the front of the trigger guard. Both shoot the same 7.65 ammo. Both are very well made rifles and shoot nicely....chris3
Also, Century has ammo for these rifles...750 round cases....chris3

Let me know when you are ready to sell!
First rifle I ever had, talked dad into getting one around 1970. $39.95
Mine (or what’s left of it) is a 1909 turned down bolt in 7.65 cal.
Used a Lee hand loader, to keep it fed for years. Still have the rifle and Lee loader. The only reason I don’t shoot it now is because I wore it out. (That took 20 years)
At first used .311 bullets then I only could find .313. Wish I knew how many rounds I put through that rifle. To be honest with you I used it until the barrel was shot (gone) inside.

shc1,
Time to turn that rifle into a high grade sporter I suppose. That's what I bought mine for originally. That never panned out, couldn't ever bring myself to pull it apart.
You also may be able to find an original replacement barrel and start the fun all over again.

i went down to pick up a 1889 beaumont vitali that has been eating at me for 3 weeks at a local shop and he had in a beautiful argentina with excellent steel, 90% wood for $150. he said he just got it in today and so i grabbed it and said ill take both. while i browsed waiting for paper work, 3 people saw the mauser and wanted to buy it, glad i acted quickly, its a nice one.
