I bought this at a gun show for 150 bucks last weekend.
It is a from the Koishikawa (Tokyo) Arsenal. It is one of the early ones since it has a B barrel code. The bore is pretty shiny yet with strong rifling.http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data//500/7782Picture_35.jpg http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data//500/7782Picture_34.jpg http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data//500/7782Picture_33.jpg

I saw a show on the history channel recently that said that USGI's scrubbed most of the mums off under orders from the govt. The show said it was done so the Japanese government would not be shamed.

Any truth to this?

It was done to give some respect to the Japanese.

How good of condition are you looking for? I've got one that I've had for a while, but I don't have any interest in it. I've never even looked down the bore . . . I'll do a thorough critique if you are interested.

I'm not sure what the going rate is as it relates to condition? I'll go dig it out now and take a good look at it . . . I need to offset the damage I just did over in the classifieds area.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, aliceinchains.

Ok, here's the report . . . I't actually nicer than I thought it was. Imagine that, huh? No, seriously . . .

Bolt, trigger, and bottom of the receiver all have the same numbers stamped on them. The numbers on the side of the reciever have the same numbers in them, but that number is longer. I'm assuming this means it's matching?

The metal finish is about 90%, with some very light surface pitting on the top of the barrel, just in front of the handguard, and on the mum (which is mostly ground, but not totally). There is also a little light surface pitting hidden here and there around the reciever. Over all, the metal is beautiful, and you really have to look to find the surface pitting in most cases.

The bore is nice and shiny, it just needed one pass of a bore snake to clear it up.

No import markings.

The stock has no markings that I can find. the rear barrel band spring is broken, but present. The little pin that goes into the stock is broken from the part you can see. I'm assuming you can get replacements? The stock is definitely the week point. It is pretty dinged up, and has a pretty good sized dent in the left side just in front of the receiver. The butt plate is pitted, along with a brown pitina colored mag well cover. The trigger guard has some light pitting as well. There are no magazine internals either.

Overall, the barreled reciever is really nice, and so is the bolt. The stock and the mag well cover / trigger guard are its week point.

I had done some research on the rifle a long time ago, and if I remember correctly, it was made in the early 30's. I have it apart right now (for the inspection), so if you guys have any questions . . . fire away.

I went looking to price parts. I didn't see where you mentioned whether or not there was a cleaning rod.

here's Numerich's page for parts
http://www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp?chrMasterModel=1040zTYPE%2038

I think I already have the same rifle more or less. Same period and I think same arsenal. The above link should help the two of you come to a price. I don't think that was mentioned either :D . Good Luck you two on making a deal.

I've heard that ammo is very expensive and can be difficult to find for these rifles, any truth to that?

neilwest

1. Yes, unless you know how to reload the cost is quite high. these are nice collectors though.

Norma ammo runs on the average of 30 to 35 bucks a box.Now i heard wind ,Hornady is going to load ammo for the 7.7.I want to give them a call and see if there is any truth to the the matter.

LOL, aliceinchains and them SWORDS he likes on the ends of his Arisakas.

The Arisaka collector motto should be. " Who needs ammo when you got a PIKE!!!"  ;)

Got a little type 38 carbine-had her for over 20 years-Kokura made-mid 30's make-not a bad little rifle with "mum" they're nicely made weapons-strong design-slow bolt(compared to a Enfield) but accurate enough. Interesting to see people into these weapons.http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data//500/25135vv1-med.JPG
