This is a Jap type 38 i bought off of gunbroker .com. It is referred by collectors as a type I. Production started in Italy on 1938 and was finished in 1939. 60,000 of these rifles were produced. The action is of the 91 carcano .All the rest of the rifle is Jap 38 configuration.

An ex-girlfriend's grandfather had one of these, with the original bayonet. He was a retired Navy Chief, whose destroyer went down after being hit by 5 kamikazes at Okinawa. Hew got the rifle from a Marine on the island after he was rescued. I remember the rear sight had a circled PB (Beretta) on it.

1. Thank you a bunch. It would be nice to add to the collection. Kinda like tying the two together.

NICE!!! I have one as well, but not in quite as good shape. Got it for $50 off an old-timer at a gun show, who didn't know what it was, other than a Japanese rifle. I'm kinda hesitant to shoot it, though, as the Carcano action isn't nearly as strong as an Arisakas...
I don't know how familiar you are with its history, so I'll stick my neck out and type some out. The Type I originated from a 1937 agreement between the Axis powers on industrial assistance, with production beginning at the Regia Fabbrica D'Armi in Terni, Italy. Production of the 60,000 contract rifles was finished in 1939. The entire production run was taken over by the navy, as the outbreak of conflict in China diverted most of the Japanese arsenal production to the army, leaving the navy to seek contract weapons elsewhere. Photos exist of navy cadets marching with Type I rifles, and they were also encountered by the 4th MarDiv at Roi-Namur, with the only units defending there being from the 61st Guard Force of the Imperial Navy...
Hope this helps some!!!

Don't be afraid to shoot it. That is what it was made for.;)

Well, I want to make sure the headspacing is OK before I give it a go. Heck, I've got four other Japanese rifles (three Type 99s and a Type 2 Paratrooper Rifle) in 7.7mm that I haven't shot yet either. One of these days I'm gonna break down and buy some Norma to use in them...;)

1. Welcome to the board Xelloss. Good to have your input. Sounds like you have the Japanese collecting bug as well. Not many of us like the old babes.

Thanks for the welcome!!! I've been a lurker on the AK forums for some time, but never really looked at the other ones 'til now. D'oh... Go figure there's a Japanese Weapons board that I didn't know about. Ah well...
Yeah, I've been into Nihon no Shoujuu (sorry, my nihongo is a bit rusty;) ) for some time now. I've bought a few over the past few years, but so far I've just been flat unable to find a Type 38 with an intact 'mum.:( The Type 2 is really the center of my collection, with intact 'mum and the dust cover still on it as well. Got lucky on that one.:D
Also have three Type 30 bayonets, all early with the hooked crossguards, including a Jinsen (Korea) arsenal one with most of the blue intact but changing color a bit though. I'm hoping to find a special paratrooper bayonet for the Type 2 someday (yeah, right).
I'll take some pics for someone to post when I get a chance to borrow my friend's digicam...
Addictive hobby, ne???;) :D
