Found this pic of a Bolshevik during the Revolution and was wondering what carbine this was. Any ideas?

I was thinking Austro-Hungarian. I don't have any books about those.

What kind of grenades are those at his side? Those aren't german mashers?

I think that is it Steve, thanks.

Does that jive though with the dates?? Supposedly this pic was taken in 1917.

Production of the Type 38 Carbine started around 1911. So, I guess the answer would be 'YES'.

Good call Steve. A Jap rifle in the hands of a Bolshevik though?

That is in fact a Type 38 Carbine. The Koishikawa Arsenal was the sole producer of them from 1911 to 1929.
