Well today I loaded my ATV into my truck and took it to a worksite. After unloading it from the truck it sat for about 5 hours in the sun with the fuel valve off...

The ATV is a 1984 TRX 200cc Honda, it has electric and pull start....

When I finally needed it I set the fuel valve to on, and I clicked the electric start but no matter what I would do it would not start...

I was getting frustrated because this morning it ran fine. I needed the thing badly to move a trailer full of Mesqiute so after an hour of trying to get the thing start I decided to spray some WD40 into the carb(didnt have any carb cleaner on me and was desprate)...

Sure enough within seconds it cranked over...except the the engine would run almost full throttle with out even touching the throttle...I had to engage the choke to get the engine down to a safe RPM...

If I press the throttle forward the engine revs even higher....

What I need to know is whats wrong...I cant seem to find the answer in any of the shop manuals...

That fuel switch can be a bitch, I always forget about it. I don't really know but my gut tells me you need to rebuild the carb.

Possible air leaking between the carb and the intake, throttle remaining stuck open, or probably carb problems.

When transporting quad make sure to use the gas shut off valve. Bumping around with it open may cause leaks, trailer fires, carb flooding or hard starts.
There should be a few sprung screws on the carb( idle, mixture, drain). One on bottom facing ground can be removed to drain what is in the carb like old gas or water.
If the high idle doesnt slow down when you put the choke in and tap the throttle a few times, maybe adjust the idle screw or the throttle cable is rusted and and is sticking.

The forums at http://dirtrider.net/ will give you an answer.

Yes I had the fuel shot off valve in the off position when transporting.

I dont think its the throttle cable, because if it was I wounld not be able to rev it even higher when I increase the throttle. I also adjusted the idle screw but goto no response....

Does it have good compression. Enough to blow your finger off of the sparkplug hole? WD40 is great starter fluid as you found out. Clean the carb, first and foremost. Then try a new spark plug. If it,s low on compression it will be a beatch to start unless it has great spark. I used to have a lil honda that I would have to pull the sparkplug and heat it cherry orange ,then throw it in vrooom.:) All because I was to cheap to rebuild it lol. Sold it that way too . Certain chain lubes will make them run wide open for a second too, with out touching the throttle.

Its got great compression...starts just fine now...it just almost runs wide open for some reason....

Gonna try and cleaning the carb again...
