well after two years of keeping an eye out I found a japanese rifle. it has the flower on the reciever a mint bore but a little surface rust on the metal parts. the stock is very good to exellent. It also has the aa sight wich is a pretty cool feature. I got the rifle and 40 rounds of norma ammo for 300.00 did i do good? The rifle looks like it just sat in a closet or something for many years and was found and sold by a relative or something. I have a japanese bayonet that i got from my grandfather a few years back and am wondering if it will fit. the bayonets markings and descriptions match that of the strait quillon type described in this forum. will it fit my rifle? how hard is it to find a proper sling for it even a repro will do.

Well Norma ammo is about 30 bucks a box.So you actually paid around240.00 for the rifle. That price is high at a gunshow or pawn shop. However the price you paid is average for what they are selling on the gun auctions.I am assuming you have a type 30 bayonet and it will fit the Type 99 rifle.
Ebay sells a lot of Jap item's.The original sling for any jap rifle fetch at least 100 bucks. You can get a repro for under 30 dollars.Iwill dig you up a link.I was curious if your rifle has the provision for the Monopod on the rear barrel band.

well going over the barrel with my gerber it seems to be around 24 inches so i dont think its a long version sorry. the info i have gathered off the internet thus far is. nagoya arsenalseries 5. ser #860xx there is a small character to the right of the nagoya stamp that resembles a square w a diagonal slash atop the left corner the symbol is very faint. the rear barrelband has no monopod provision but an inch foreward of the band there was definately something there like a nother band of some kind. the screws on the stock have been staked. there looks like some kind of scope ring grooves on the reciever that go about 45 degrees across. the right side groove is below the wood stock. are these a dust cover groove? there is no dust cover but it has the cleaning rod. There are a lot of retirees from the marines around here so more than likely it was a bringback or could have been brought back recently from okinawa. how do you clear off surface rust without messing up the blueing? i have been using clp and scrubbing it with a toothbrush then spraying it down w gun scrubber and repeating. so far no real bad pitting and looks better everytime i do it i almost forgot i do have a type 30 bayo. I am working on getting a digital camera so i can post pics soon of my treasures:) well thats the best description i can give ya alice in chains checking this forum you are all over it you know your stuff thanks for taking the time to reply

The dust cover groove is always on the receiver, never on the wood. .Your series was produced with and without Monopod. If you had a sniper model it would have a provision for a sight mount on the left side of the receiver. And a slightly longer turned down bolt handle.
How big is the groove in the wood?

the grooves are on the reciever. one just above the serial number and arsenal stamp the other just below the stock on the bolt side there is no turned down bolt it must be just a standard infantry rifle. so the grooves are for the dust cover? all numbers match the reciever. I think i'm gonna go try it out at the range this week and see how she does. pretty sure the bore is chrome lined its very shiny.

Yep the grooves are for the dust cover. Which were needed some time ago.Look at the edge of your muzzle around the crown. If you see a silver color there you no it is chrome lined.

Sportsman's Guide has repro slings and dust covers in their latest mailer.
Dust cover: AX4A-80590 $14.97
Sling: AX4A-55827 $12.97
They still haven't shipped my folding M1 Carbine paratrooper stock, yet. I guess they must be waiting for an order and some money or something like that. I keep hoping but they must not be psychic.
Any way:
