I've always thought a 35/9mm intermediate cartridge should have been invented, a modern tactical equivalent of the 35 Remington that'll fit in the AR/AK platform.. Something designed for 100yd and under that fires 150-200gr 35 caliber bullets at 7.62x39mm speeds. Something with the case width of the 7.62x39mm but taper angle and OAL of the 223 so it would feed in AR mags. It could be designed for non-military or special missions and use non FMJ bullets designed for maximum energy transmission to target.

I'm guessing 180gr would be the best balance between velocity, weight, and stability.

Anyone think it's a good idea?

i'm no expert on this.. but isn't the .50 Beowulf supposed to meet every need you just specified?.. and its already available....

that and I checked the ballistics.. and it will hit anything under 100 yards.. so.. seems kind of like reinventing the wheel to me..

plus the 50 Beowulf already fits nicely in AR mags with a new follower.... heavy grain.. 1800fps muzzle velocity.. which isn't close to the 2400 fps muzzle velocity of the 7.62x39, but I thin it'd make up with bullet weight to produce enough stopping power...

good idea.. and personally I dont think there could ever be "enough" options for the AR-15 ;)

I was going for a less expensive round that would have higher capacity and could load the variety of bullets available in 357/358 caliber. Lower recoil too, better suited for full auto or burst.

Beowulf is cool, but I think something in the middle would be nice too.

I like the idea of a .35cal AR, greater mag capacity and far less recoil then the .458 or .50 Beowolf. Sounds like a good deer cartridge also, .35 cal bullets that work great in a Marlin should work as well in an AR. I wonder if a .35 Remington case could be cut down, and used for this? I'd buy one if someone builds it.:)

35 Rem could be a good parent case. It almost fits as is.

I dont know if this would work, but a 200gr .35 remington is only 5/16 too long to go in an AR mag, if the bullet could seated deeper in the case? or use a shorter bullet? the empty case seems to fit and stack nicely in the mag. It would be nice if an unaltered .35 case could be used in an AR, lots cheaper and easier the most of the other alternative calibers out there.

A 357 Rem mag 180gr bullet may do the trick. I'll try sizing it up in my AR some time.

35 Rem in an AK is a known success, which is what I plan to try at some point.
