Years ago I bought a type 99 from a gunsmith in Missoula, Montana, and found surplus 6.5 mm ammo without too much difficulty but no 7.7mm. Norma had it, but it was expensive.

My gunsmith showed me a layout for converting new 30-06 brass to match the dimensions of the 7.7mm brass (evidently they're pretty close), which I thought was pretty slick for those with a type 99 who can reload.

After paying $1.50 per round for Norma ammo, I went asking around at a gun show years ago about 7.7 ammo options and an old guy told me to use trimmed-back .30-06 brass for resizing and loading.

I've been using these for years now, but didn't want to convert all my '06 brass. Since .270 Win is basically a necked-down '06 case I now use that brass for all my 7.7 loads. They're close enough in case dim's not to make a diff and I've not had any case problems with those converted brass.

.270 was my best choice, since I find a lot of brass for it and don't have a rifle in that caliber. 8 X 57 brass will work as well, but I keep those for my hunting rounds.

They're doing 7.7mm Japanese as well...
