Good question. I tend to like good ol' steel because they are stronger and can usually take more of a beating. Aluninum is light but deforms readily. Polymer and glass-reinforced polymer (Bulgarian waffle mags and orange EG, Chinese and Russian "bakelite" mags, respectively) are strong, lighter than steel (usually) and resist corrosion.

So for me it's steel or polymer.

In the AR? Steel UK mags are my favorite, followed by USGI aluminum, Orlite and Thermold in that order.
Plastic feed lips don't hold up very well for me.
