View Full Version : Any problems w/ Barnaul HP's?

I tried Russian ammo thru my DPMS for the first time. In the beginning, there were 2 FTF's where the tip of the bullet hung up at the entrance to the chamber. Ammo was Barnaul 62g .223 hollow points. They were on sale so I figured that I'd try to lessen my ammo spending. No problems w/ Winchesters.
The overall length of the cartridge is noticeably shorter than Winchester ammo. Is this problem a known issue, where AR15's may have problems with hollow points? Mags (USGI) were used and I just got new Wolff x-power springs but haven't tried them yet. Weapon is always cleaned and well lubed w/ only about 1300 rounds thru her. I'm also gonna try a little steel cased FMJ one day. I'm thinking that the mag springs will help. I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks.

I've never tried Barnaul, but I have shot Wolf extensively. I found that the much maligned laquer build-up was pretty much a nil issue so long as I used Rem-Oil as a final lubricant when cleaning. No problems even in an SBR.

I have yet to try some of the new polymer coated ammo since I have so much Wolf still.

Just wondering.....you did measure a different round than the one that hung up didn't you? That kind of malfunction does tend to compress the bullet into the casing.

I don't know how "noticable" it is, but perhaps you can post a pic for us to compare. I wouldn't think that it should be noticeably shorter, but it s possible I suppose. As I said, I've never messed with this ammo before.

I'll be picking up some 223 Wolf poly tomorrow for the first time for my AR15. I never had any problems with 762 laquer or poly Wolf in the AK-47. I noticed that the Barnaul HP was shorter when first loading mags the night before I went shooting. I noticed that the tip was farther away from the front mag wall than the Winchesters.
I guess the diff is the material missing from when they drilled the hole in the tip. New rounds' measurements:
Winchester value pack = 2.212" long,
Barnaul HP = 2.198" long.

I don't know if this would cause a problem but I'm "blaming" the mags first and will try next w/ new Wolff XP springs that I just got. The USGI mags I were using were bought used and probably were tired. I also suspected that the sharp, "wide" edge on the hollow point tip could have prevented proper engagement with the ramp. I'm going to change one thing at a time and retest.
Thanks for the reply!

Update: Fired off some Winchester VP FMJ, Remington UMC FMJ, Wolf poly FMJ, and Barnaul HP. The same problem happened only to the Barnaul HP's. I believe that the wide tip is causing it to miss the feed ramp and it would probably happen with ANY brand of HP's. The tip gets caught on the vertical flat spot below the ramp. So, it's use FMJ only until I get around to extending the ramp.

Extend those suckers like the Colt M-4 specs call for and polish them up lik RRA does. I bet that will fix your problem.

Those are exactly my thoughts! I've seen pics previously posted of the generous M4 ramps and mine look nothing like them. I know that it'd fix the problem! Thanks.

Edit: Found the pics -

Success! I finally got around to Dremeling the ramps and bolt went into battery 100% of the time while hand cycling w/ hollow points. I foresee no problems during actual firing. Thanks again to forum information!
