The bayonet looks like a type 30. An early production, since the blade has fullers ,and the cross guard is hooked.
However, the fuller is not extended back far enough on the blade from what i see in the picture, and there is no Arsenal mark.Which leads me to say it is a trainer. Was the blade sharpened?

Take a look at the fullers on these type 30 bayonets, and see how far they extend the blade. All these bayonets have Arsenal marks and serial numbers on the back strap. And i also noted how small the release button was on whos2kno's bayonet picture. And have concluded it is a trainer.

i think your right aliceinchains.
the blade does not have a edge at all ( except where my friend as a boy try to put one on it)
so what should he do with the bayonet?
keep it like it is or restore it and see how it turns out.

I sold a lot of Jap Type 30 bayos for a friend a number of years ago, even some of the more exotic pole-arm types. An educated guess would be that pictured bayo is for a "trainer". That would seem to explain the absence of arsenal markings near the quillon and the presence on kanji characters on the grips.
