This knife looks promising, you can find it under $50.00. I have only heard good things about their tools. Thinking of picking one up.

Any body got one???

The sheath looks chintzy, I would get an aftermarket one anyway.

The sheath looks chintzy, but it isn't. Sturdy, heavy kydex or kydexlike liner on the inside, and the stone pocket holds a diamond stone, firestriker and tinder, with space left for paracord and small compass or whatever.

The blade is sturdy, both of mine came w/good edge geometry and sharpness out of the box.

If you were going to do a lot of chopping, I'd suggest a BK-9, it is a better chopper.

Personally for general chopping and hacikng use in a hardwood forest, the Woodsmans Pal is hard to beat if your not well experienced with an axe. there's a learning curve there too. Axes are really extremly dangerous in use, and demand full concentration every second. Saws are very efficent much safer in use and much quieter, usually faster too. The sven saw is a great tool.

Softwood forest or grass,a machete is hard to beat, even a cheap 12" tramontina.

But, barring the above, I own and use 2 Bk-9's and I'm very satisfied with them, 1 has a permanent place in the car emergency kit.

With all that said, your satisfaction will depend a lot on your intended use.

If I had to go live in the woods for2 or 3 weeks, and could only have 1 tool, it would be a BK-7.

Hope this is of some help!

I also have one but have'nt used it yet. A friend of mine at work gave me a piece of bodock wood so I could play around with making a new handle for it. These knives also compare very well with custom made knives.

Ok I have been on a picture posting binge tonite. Here are my RTAK and BK7. The RTAK would be a good chopper but the blade is'nt very heavy. I think the BK9 would probably be a better chopper like 5Knives said. http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data//500/18487RTAK_BK7-med.JPG

AZRELOADER,

Check the following;

www.eknifeworks.com

www.knifecenter.com

www.knifeworks.com

and

www.camillus.com
(sometimes overstock or seconds)

MSRP is $79, but you should be able to find easily for less than $50

I've done repeat business with all of these, and will again, never been disappointed with any of them. Hope this helps

Well I finally got to handle one yesterday and all I can say is HARDCORE ! That knife felt so good in my hand, great balance and quality!

I finally found one at a Texas Original Army Navy store and I had to laugh at their prices! You can find the Becker Combat 7 for under $49 at several on line knife stores......the surplus jack asses wanted $149 for the same knife.....an entire $100 more plus state sales tax.......:lool:

Looks like a good utility/fighting knife. My hand is wider than 4" across the knuckles so my concern would be the grip area..

My palm width is 4 1/4" wide and my hand did not feel "crowded" at all, in fact it had a little play.

Optimus Prime,

Glad you found one at a decent price, they really are a lot of knife for the money. My earlier post said I used 2 BK-9's, and that one was permanent in my car 'kit". That was a typo (I'm very big on typos, which is why you see most of my posts edited.) What I was trying to say was 2 BK-7's, and the 1 in the car has replaced the Ka-Bar that used to live there. For a knife in that size range, the BK-7 seems to have a lot more going for it. I have bent Ka-bars in the past, somehow I don't see a BK-7 bending or breaking. Be sure to let us know what you like (and dislike) about it after you use it a bit.

Thanks, some times a knife with a bulge at both ends is uncomfortable in big hands..

last christmas my brother got me a bk-9. that thing is freaking amazing. its huge and heavy and there is definately no way your going to bend that .25 inch thick blade. a month ago i was up in the adirondak mountains with mine and used it for some chopping of 1-1.5 inch limbs. very very capable and the blade was still plenty sharp. out of the box, it will shave your arm hair, lol, and for a knife that big, thats pretty decent. the blade is very heavy and the epoxy coating they put on it is very durable. its a great knife. as for the sheath, it is ok imo. its more than sufficient but not the best. for mine i sewed in a loop at the bottom for a 1" leg strap with a buckle. it is now much more secure and comfortable to wear. i was thinking about some wooden grips for it with finger grooves or something pretty like that but i must say that the synthetic ones it has are very tactical and comfy (my hands are large too). plus they are held in with 3 allen bolts!!! i say just go for the bk-9. my .02

Agreed, if you're going to do much heavy chopping (and I consider 1 1/2 " and up to be heavy chopping) the BK-9 is a better choice.

I've owned and used a Woodsmans Pal for many years, and prefer it to anything other than saw and full size axe (there is a learning curve with the "Pal though, it takes some getting used to) anyway if not for that I'd have a BK-9 for heavier chopping..

As it is I really like the BK-7 for my personal use.
