View Full Version : Where can I find a Jap rifle on the internet?

NO ONE here in Southern Indiana sells Jap rifles. Actually, you're lucky if you can find any milsurp, let alone anything unusual. Soooooo, I decided to look out on the internet. The only place that I can find that sells them is

Military Gun Supply (http://www.militarygunsupply.com/shop/)

I called them today about a rifle and it was sold. They said that they are unable to update their site right now due to upcoming changes. It has been like that for at least a couple of weeks now. What am I supposed to do? Call and ask them to describe every gun to me...on my own dime? Besides, they seem to be a little on the expensive side. 200 plus dollars for a 99 with a ground mum doesn't sound like the kind of prices I've been hearing about here.

I'm hesitant about looking for one on the auction boards. How do you know they aren't selling you a trainer without knowing it? Actually, I'm not really sure that I would know one anyway.

With that being said, is there anywhere else on the internet where I might find one? I think that I might already know the answer.
:(

Thanks, in advance, for your replies.

To first address the most important thing. I have never seen a trainer being sold as a shooter on an auction or any other gun seller on the net. That would be a liability IMO.

Japanese rifles have not been imported for some time. This is why they are so hard to find. In all honesty i searched who usually has some jap rifles and they are out. A gunshow is your best bet.

Try Empire Arms, they have had some lately, get on their e-mail list. You have to have an ffl with them before you order, and you have to be quick, they go Fast!

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't think there was any place out there selling them now. I didn't know Empire Arms ever sold Jap rifles. So, I'll have to keep an eye out for the future. You know, I decided to go out and look around on the internet auctions today just to see what they had and to see what the prices were. Somehow I stumbled upon an auction that was going to end in four hours and found this little beauty.

Jap rifle (http://www.auctionarms.com/search/displayitem.cfm?ItemNum=5717113)

http://pictures.auctionarms.com/4546124648/jap.JPG

So I bought it.

The seller had a really good rating and appears to be from a gun shop in Massawhatever. Sorry to ask a question and then turn around and do my own thing without even reading it. I hate it when the other guys do that.:(

So what do you think? Will it blow up if I try to shoot it? I wonder if it really is a "last ditch" rifle. The price was right, even for a wall hanger. Now, if the guy will just contact me....:hyper:

The correct name is substitute, no it won't blow up if you shoot it. That is if the headspace is ok.It looks beautiful. I would love to know what arsenal it is from. Yes that is a last ditch rifle, but that is a nick name.

Here is some info on the substitute rifle.

Thanks...and thanks. The seller and I got together today. I sent him my C&R today, via snail mail to Massawhatever. I also e-mailed him a signed copy of my C&R but he said that he'd have to wait until he got my snail mail copy before he could send it. I was hoping that he might go ahead and send it since I e-mailed him a copy and then put one in the mail. Oh well.... Those Massawhatevers sure are sticklers for rules.

I'm thinkin' late next week should be about right.

He also told me about how nice the rifle was and how he sold a Mauser last week and they all bid on it in the last 30 seconds and how he was surprised that they didn't do it to me and....

I was ready and waiting on a T1 line for just such an occasion...and I had a trick or two up my sleeve too.:rockin: :nanaboo:

The stock looks refinished but it is so nicely done. You might have got a cherry Tracy, which i hope you did. I can't wait until you get it .

I would like to add that i would have bid on that rifle if i would have seen it up for auction.I hope you are the next owner very soon.;)

Tracy

Thanks Alice. I can't wait either. The owner didn't act like he was happy to part with it for that price. I've gotten lucky on the last few guns that I've bought. Statistically speaking, that does not bode well for the future. :D

Thanks. I have it by now, of course. It's just a matter of getting a picture or two and posting.... :D

My time all went bye bye.

And, I don't think I could take a better picture than the one above. It is just as advertised. Anyway, I am going to get around to posting something on it. I even translated the codes last week. Of course, I forgot them this week.

So how do you like it? Is it mint, refinished, how's the bluing? etc. Are you sleeping with it on the couch because the wife doesn't want it in bed?

Tracy
06-11-2004, 09:29 PM
The blueing is pretty good. I'd guess 75% or so and it looks original. The barrel looks pretty worn on the grooves as best I can tell. I don't really understand that as I would think that a substitute rifle would have a nicer barrel. The stock has been clear coated with something, unfortunately. It is a beautiful rifle overall. You can even see where parts of the bolt body (maybe you call that the cocking piece) are rough cut. I've been wanting to scan that.

My wife did comment the other day that our bedroom smells like gun oil. I like it. :D

I have a substitute that has a mum and looks hardly used. However the rifling is not as sharp like say a K98.So is the rifling cut differently?

Tracy get us a pick of the safety if you would.

Is the rifling cut differently??? :dunno:

Are you asking me?:D

Here's the info that I translated.

It is a series 35 Toyo Kogyo. It appears that the s/n's went to 57,000. Mine is in the 56,xxx range. Since these rifles were manufactured from 1939 to 1945, I'm guessing that mine was manufactured in 1945. Is there any other information that I can glean from these symbols?

I've scanned the bolt and have tried a dozen times, at least, to upload it to no avail. I've been having trouble with Gunsnet for the last six weeks or so with this and not being notified of thread postings. I can't upload from my other computer either. I'll keep working on it.

Heaven help us. I'm going to attempt to link to my photo in Webshots.

They say that it could take up to 30 minutes to process after posting.

Highest serial number observed in Honeycutts book is 56591.Front barrel band is riveted.Of course no provision for cleaning rod.The rear barrel band is solid.I seen yours has a swivel. Some of the late issues didn't.

The safety should be welded with notch. That is why i would like to see a pick of it.
And i just wanted to say that the forestock is seperate from the main stock.Held in place buy the barrel bands like all substitute rifles. Many times people think that they were duffle cut but they were made this way to conserve wood.

Tracy have you ever tried www.photoisland.com

I have now. Let's try this again.

Hey, that worked out pretty good. Thanks Alice. You can see where it was milled quickly there on the end. I think you probably want a photo of the back of the bolt. The wife is calling me to supper so I'll see if I can't post another one a little later.

Tracy i am just seeing a red x, hey if you continue to have problems send me the pics via email and i will post them on a new thread if you like.

Here is one more link. They prefer you only post hunting guns, so C&R is ok.

Tracy, have you set up a photo album here? Not difficult to do if you haven't

Tracy
06-13-2004, 09:49 PM
Yes, I set one up here a long time ago. However, lately it has been giving me trouble when I try to upload photos. It gives me trouble on BOTH of my computers.

Try, try again.

I got one through. I wonder if this has something to do with dial-up connections and traffic on gunsnet?

Is this what you are talking about, Alice?

Yeah that is cool, you also have the welded safety which is correct for the rifle.Very nice pic.

Here's another one. You can see that it is roughly milled.
http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data//500/14461Jap_Bolt_3.jpg

I can get small pictures through, but large ones won't upload. It has to have something to do with dial-up speeds.

On the other hand, I don't know why you can't reference Webshots or Photoisland.

So, then, there's normally a safety on there? Somewhere?

aliceinchains

Tracy i am on dial up. But i always resize my pictures regardless where i upload them to.I do infact have a problem uploading them if i don't resize them.

Normally I cut mine down so that they don't have a lot of extra picture in there. I also make them smaller. However, maybe I should start shrinking them a little more.

Good Grief! If I cut them down much more, I'll have thumbnail pics.

On the other hand, it looks like we may have solved my uploading problem. :D:up:

That big knob on the back of your bolt is the safety.Take the bolt out of your rifle and push and turn on it clockwise. It will come right off .

Tracy
06-13-2004, 10:25 PM
This is the one that was killing me. I cut it down a little more and it uploaded immediately. http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data//500/14461Jap_Bolt-med.jpg

Of course, I don't need it now.

I did that. It just sorta' fell apart in my hands. That's one easy bolt to take apart. I see how the safety works now too. I turned it with the back of my hand. I had thought earlier that maybe it had been deactivated in some way. Thanks again, Alice.

I'm past my bedtime.:)
