Remember, approximately 12 percent of officers killed, on average, are killed while conducting vehicle stops. This should emphasize what we always say, 'THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP.

Just watch how many officers discard their training as soon as they are done training with an FTO. I no longer work in law enforcement....But, when I did it was not uncommon to see officers on my dept. leaning into a stopped vehicle.
The best way to stay safe, is to follow your training, and be observant. Stay behind the door post, keep your weapon angled away from the driver, don't permit someone else to take control of your traffic stop. If you can't see a persons' hands....That person is in control. Don't approach a vehicle with any object in your gun hand.
These are just a few of the things to keep in mind when you go out on the road. Traffic stops can be dangerous....Especially to a complacent officer. Remember....The registered owner of the vehicle, is not the only person who may be driving, or riding in it.
Stay focused, and go home to your family at the end of your shift. I have been to an officers funeral, and it was not a pleasant experience. Don't let yourself become a training subject for future law enforcement officers. They don't need to see the dash cam evidence of your mistakes.
Be safe out there!

good points!
In addition to my regular law enforcment job I work at the police academy in the final testing process of the recruits. Its amazing how many don't find weapons on my person. I don't even hide them in "no no" areas, a knife in my boot or gun in my hat...tsk tsk...be thorough, it is afterall, your life (or your partners).
Recently heard of a detective cuffing a suspect, doing a pat down and placing into another officers squad  the other officer never even searched the suspect....no one gets in your squad unless you search them!!!
"go home at the end of your shift" good motto to work and live by.

Can a LEO take his shotgun/AR out of the trunk when he pulls a car over whenever he wants in case he has a bad feeling, or does a cop have to be shot at first before he can get his shotty/AR?
Also, what are the regulations for personal arms? Can a LEO use his own AR/ whatever if he qualifies with it or does it vary from dept to dept?

Approaching vehicle with shotgun/Ar-15? I doubt it. If you feel the need to use it, then the occupants should be walking back towards you and not vice versa.
Dept policy dictates what you can use when on duty.
