www.ltspecpro.com

That's Cold Steel's 'special projects' site, where you can get better prices than the standard website.

are ka-bar knives good for practical use and carrying?

They've done the job for decades. However, the leather washer handles and sheaths tend to rot in humid environments.

You might want to consider the "SPEC PLUS" line from Ontario. Very good copy of the KA-BAR with a rubberized grip.

I have both!:rockin:

If you are a total knife maniac and money is no object here is the sight for you:

http://www.knifeart.com/

My brother introduced me to it. He is going to end up getting me killed (by my wife) when I buy something from here. He is to knives as I am to guns. :D

I second this. I have their KA-BAR clone and a 10" bolo machete. Both are badass, hardworking knives. On my last camping trip, I forgot my hatchet, and ended up using the KA-BAR clone and a rubber mallet to split firewood. The mallet took more of a beating than the knife did. The knife lost some finish on the blade, but the mallet lost some material.

My 2 favorites:

www.bussecombat.com

www.swamprat.com

They are sister companys using the same equipment, but different steels and carry the same warranty. The warranty is unconditional lifetime against anything other than intentional damage. The best part, you get to decide if the damage is intentional or not and the warranty follows the knife not the owner. This says quite alot about the confidence they have in their product.

Busse is pricey, but probably the toughest knife out there (Jerry Busse encourages extreme abuse of his blades). Most of their stuff goes to military and LEO. There was about a 7 month streach where they basicly didn't take any orders but the shop was still going 24/7. Only 2 knives are available now as they are introducing the new line at the rate of about 2 knives/month.

Swamp Rat Knife Works is the economy version of Busse. Still, extremely tough and have pretty much blown anything else close in price out of the water. I use one at work and have just managed to wear the coating a bit. Broke a Ka-Bar doing the same stuff. Yes, you can pry with them if you have to.

Might not be your cup of tea, but give them a look see in any event. May be worth your while.
