Hello,
I found a Jap rifle (T38??) at my local gunshop for $50, but the stock is bubba'ed up. There is no front lower handguard on the lower half in front of the barrel band.
Is that stock one piece all the way out on the bottom or is it a "lower handguard" in front of the band??? Can I get a replacement or it just not worth it?? TIA

You might watch e-bay. Jerks break these down to sell the parts there, destroying history.

Be on the look-out for a wall-hanger that has has a breech rusted so badly it cannot be restored to shooting condition. You should be able to get it cheap, too. That is how I restored a sporterized T99 to military specs. It may not be a real collector piece, but it looks good and was fun to bring back into proper configuration.
With what you paid for the bubba and what you might find in a wall-hanger, you COULD make out pretty well.
Here's my restored T99:

To answer your question there was no jap type 38 rifle produced with a lower hand guard. As with all Jap rifles the hand guard was seperate from the main stock.Depending on the condition of the rifle and what Arsenal it is. 50 bucks just for the bolt alone is very common. It is a bubba and an original stock will set you back at least a hundred bucks.
It stands as a parts gun. There are so many Jap rifles that were sportorized. And now the problem is that there is no surplus military stocks to replace them with.

One confusing exception as far as a one piece stock is the type 99 substitute. The stock was factory seperated at the rear barrel band.A lot of people think they were duffle cut from being brought back by a vet.

Aliceinchains,
Thanks for the input. I actually think it is a Type 99 now.
It is pretty rusted up, but has the "airplane" sights. I found a nice all matching Type 99 vet bring back in town, but has no
"airplane" sight wings and the Mum has three big slashed through
it. But, it is in good shape. I think I can get it for $175. Is this a good price or not??
TIA

Does it have a bolt cover (matching numbered), monopod and cleaning rod? If not, witha slashed Mum I'd go about $125. Don't know that a defaced Mum is necessarily a "bringback". IIRC the general concensus is that most unmolested Mums are usually bringbacks. Course without military documentation all "bringbacks" are just another rifle.

I would rather have a struck mum as opposed to a ground one.Myself i don't consider that a bad price for an all matching nice Jap Type 99.
150 Bucks is the average at my local gunshop. But they are hit and miss. Some have crappy stocks and nice metal or vice versa.

I agree about the "bringback" story. Buy the gun not the story.
But, I also agree that obviously I would like an intact Mum, but a slashed Mum is better than a ground off one. It is all matching numbered still and in "good" shape. It looks waaaay better than others that I have seen. I would be willing to pay $150 bucks for it but not more. I was just looking for some expertise on a "fair" price to not screw my friend. THX

Here is a type 99 stock up for sale . It really pisses me off when you can buy a whole rifle for what the stock brings.
