View Full Version : What is the most used and useful knife you own?

What do you consider the most usefull knife you own? The one that maked you feel kind of nekkid when you dont have it at hand.

And just to keep this from being the shortest ihread in the history of the Internet. Nobody gets to say "My Swiss Army Knife!". After all we ALL know THAT dont we?

For me it's a 30 year old Russell Harington "green river" brand. 5" blade, walnut scales, plain old carbon steel. Takes a shaving edge, holds it well and is easy to resharpen. Really more a short American style butcher knife than anything, Today you can buy them as a kit from Texas Knife Supply and others. They call it a camp knife.

It's the one I use most in the kitchen, (and I do all the cooking at my house,) in the garden, fishing, hunting, and camping, and just bumming around in the woods. or taking a walk down by the creek.

I sit down and plan this trip or that project and plan to use this or that knife. And whatever else I take, my little "green River" will probably be there too. Currently in it's third homemade sheath ("mountain man pouch style" the only kind I really know how to make.) Darn thing just feels like part of me!

Best $6.00 I ever spent, on a knife that is, why I remember that in Tiajuana you could get ... um ... never mind, this is presumably a family forum right?

So, I told you about mine, please tell us about your "all the time knife".

That's funny, that is the exact knife that first poped into my head utill I read that sentance......:D

Seriously though, my first qualtiy knife was a Wenger Swiss Army knife that I bought with some money I earned when I was about 9 years old. Got it at an old Oshman's Sporing Goods, back when they were small little mall boutiques, not Super Stores like they are today.

I still have that knife, I am now in my mid 20's, and it is very handy. Will pass it on to my children when my wife and I get around to that.

Okay Optimus Prime, we believe you and we'll let you get away with it this time. But only because you bought it with your own money when you were 9. 8-)

But nobody else!

The SAK's are great, I finally worked up to a swiss champ in a belt pouch about 8 years ago, Since I quite working I only use it for something 5 or 6 times a day. Once in a while I get the "What do you use that for?" referring to my SAK not my AK.

I just smile and say "Everything"

When idiots ask me that about my AK's, I've been know to give very rude answers.

I have to say my plain old Schrade Old Timer 80T Stockman.

It’s sure not fancy and for sure it’s not Hi-Tech, but I’ve had one on me almost constantly for the past 30 years or more. Not the same one of course. I’ve worn out 2 and lost one that was almost worn out. I’m talking about worn out from normal re-sharpening and not from inferior materials.

I’ve never broken one, but I only use it as a knife ,well, once or twice as a screwdriver :) .

Three blades.. .three different edges. One utility edge, one very fine and one coarse.

Of course I carry a large tactical folder and I’ve tried other brands, but keep coming back to old reliable.

Yeah, I bought a cousin of mine a Wenger with a built in multi plier......forgot the model name. It has four driver bits stored inside the red handle. Came with a leather sheath.

Iv'e got a S&W tactical folder with the tonto type blade. use it every day at work. it's a nice box cutter now.
origianlly got it cause I install security systems and we go to the ghetto allot. Had a guy try to rob my van once and didn't have anything but a tire iron to scare him off. we weren't allowed to carry guns at ADT so I bought the knife.
now i'm a subcontractor and my boss and I both carry 1911's.

You named a great one there, and one that is near the top of my list too. Talk about utility and value! Used to carry the Uncle Henry in one pocket and the SAK in the other. The Stockman blades are really more generally usefull than anything on the SAK. I've only lost one Stockman, and pretty much used up another. I getting nervous because my new one (only 8 years old) has been missing for a couple of weeks now. I probably wore my old one out opening whiskey bottles more than anything else. I dont do that anymore, much.

That sound interesting, I always carry a Leatherman but I dont like it all that much, I'll try to find a site to look up the Wenger. Thanks!

I've developed an aversion to S&W anything, but I've got an older S&W fixed blade that I truly do like. Lots of knives but I've never owned a tanto blade for some reason, what do you especially like about that blade design?

Oh yeah, about the carry problem, I've been told that meter readers, electric, and utility workers, and the telephone repairmen sometimes carry Wasp and Hornet spray. the kind that emits a 20 foot stream, only for defense against wasps and hornets of course. I've also been told that the blindness in case of an accident is only .. ah... temporary, you know a day or two, but that the pain lasts longer. Cant say whether any of that is true or not.

Great posts and well thought out answers guys, lets get some more people in here!

Gunsnetwork is good enough to give us a try, lets make it work, for everyones benefit!

My S&W SWAT knife. I use it so much I barely can keep an edge on it anymore. I bought it when I was going to be deployed to Bosnia, and then I gave it to my best friend who was working nights at the time at a hospital and walking alone in a dark parking lot. (Her boyfriend wasn't very happy). I missed it so much I bought another.

My Leatherman is also something I never leave anywhere without.

I have wonderful knives that I carry on and off duty from Emerson, Spyderco, and Benchmade. The blade that does most of the work is actually the straight edge blade on my Leatherman Wave!!!!!

My cold steel voyager accompanies me whenever i leave my house. Some times just to get the mail, other times when i go camping, but my voyager is always with me. I also have a swiss card in my wallet, and it does have a knife blade, so swiss army knife.:D

I always carry my Leatherman Wave and my Benchmade Stryker. I use the Stryker for cleaning my fingernails and opening boxes more than anything else, but I do manage to scare my coworkers while doing it ;) I also use the scissors on the Leatherman to trim my fingernails a lot.

I like the tonto tip cause it's easier for me to work with as far as utility in my job line, but I first got it to be diff from my friends out here. they all have S&W autos with standard blades. mine is the four or so inch special ops model with serrations at the base. only thing I would ever do different is not get the black coated blade again. it scratches off really easy and looks kinda rough after a while.

Good posts gang! All seem to be well thought out answers. I've wasted a ton of money in the past by buying knives i thought looked real good, and then found out I had no use for them whatsoever. I'm a packrat so now they all live in a drawer someplace, dusty maybe but never rusty, Once a year or so I take them out wipe them off and wonder what the H_l I was thinking of when I bought them!

I see a number of you like the Benchmade and Emersons, nary a one of either in my collection, probably because I'm too cheap, I'll have to check them out. (my wife calls my cherished collection, my knife pile, but she's rarely that rude to other people)

ponder

Which blade style and length do you have?
I bought a XL clip point and found out I didn't like it much, on mine the blade seems too thick, and the length doesn't go in pockets very well. Did I get the wrong version?

gi_janearng

Yeah the leatherman, I don't even likr mine, all the tools are too soft, it's slow to open, it's not a comfortable grip. and it's always in a pouch on my left side. I think it's because I need it so often. Maybe it's because I havent been able to wreck it in however many years since the supertool came out.

A friend of mine swears by his S&W SWAT knife, he wont even loan it to me to see if I might like it!
He says I'll hurt it then he'd have to kill me, some friend!

netanyaman

sounds like you've got some quality knives there. Careful, you are in danger of becoming a collector. Well at least it's cheaper than collecting ex-Wives! ... Never mind how I know.

LHS

Isn't it astonishing how often you use the scissors? I think I've used a scissors on a SAK for at least 20 years to keep my mustache trimmed, and nails of course. and for about a million other things.

When I was still working I used a Blackie collins SOG something or other to open boxes, 4 + inch blade fully serrated and actually illegal in my municipality, wicked looking but one H__l of a box cutter! I got my share of those looks too! But then when any one needed some serious cutting done, they always came looking for me. LOL!

Come to think of it, every one there was always very polite and considerate, I just thought they really liked me, do you think maybe it was that knife?

ntegratedj

Thanks for the response, I think I'm going to have to get something with a tanto blade and see how that works for me.

This thread has really worked well I think. I'm learning about other peoples choices, and questioning my own. IMHO, thats a very good thing, Thank you all!!

5KNIVES i have both the medium and the extra large clip point voyagers. They were on sale, so i decided to buy two for the price of one. I prefer the medium because i wear slacks most of the time, it sits low in my pocket. It is very light so i barely notice it, until i need it. The medium maybe a little to small for those with large hands though.

I have a large coldsteel tanto point voyager with the plain edge that I've carried daily for the past 5 or 6 years. It has been used for everything from opening mail, to widdling wood, to trimming automotive hoses, to being used as a steak knife, to skinning rabbits, and the list goes on and on. It takes and holds a wonderful edge. I like the tanto point because it has a stouter point and it allows me to do some cutting that a clip point wouldn't allow me to do. My voyager is of the old style with the molded plastic clip, and the clip has since broken off years ago.

I wouldn't trade this knife for anything. Actually that isn't true. Before I had this knive, I had the same one but with a 50/50 edge. I traded it for a Taurus .38 snubnose. It was all legit. I think I made out in the deal.

Most used.. a KaBAR. Every jump and deployement in Division, it was there. Everytime I am out on the property, hunting,or fishing it is there. It is next to the nightstand every night. Say what you will, I will not be swayed. My KaBAR has proven itself to me time and time again. Personal carry in normal wear, Gerber Spectre. 8dDUCE.

I have a "Western" Bowie knife that I bought with money from my paper route 35+ years ago. It goes with me camping & hunting, in fact everywhere my truck goes, it goes.

It's carbon steel blade holds an edge I can shave with.

I have many newer, higher tech knives cause I love blades, but my Bowie is my most trusted companion!

PS: It cost me $14 & change back then!

My last one was used to cut open sand bags in kuwait when we were cleaning out our trucks to ship back home. Its never opened a can, but Ive used it cutting zip ties off the chain tie downs on trains which can get the blade pretty beat up also constantly terying to get between the zip tie and the chain, its cut lots of cardboard, packaging wrap, and just about everything else that you can cut that will dull a knife quick. Ive sharpened it 4 times in the last year, I think the next time Ill send it to benchmade and try to collect on the warranty since Im stateside.

Gerber EZ out, locking folder. Cheap (30 bucks at Wal Mart), holds a good edge, and it isn't so expensive that I'm afraid to hurt it. A very practical knife.

I have two. First, a USMC surplus M8 bayonett. I dont know how it is for a bayonett, but its sharp as hell and stays that way. Second, a CHEAP $9 knife made by Fury, a 3.5" lockblade. Ive sent it through hell and back, from leaving it outside in the rain (accedent) to skinning squirrels and cutting off branches! My only complaint is that after cutting branches, it gets dull quick. Then agian, it sharpens easy, so I cant really complain, and its not made for tree pruning so again I cant complain. Take note that I have close to 40 knives, and all of them are good ones (if they arent, they are either broken or sold off before they get a chance in my collection!).

Love that Western Bpwie, I'm on my 3rd one, A couple of ex-wives have the other 2 (No, I don't have a clue why, but definitely not worth the argument at the time). I've always cut the guards down on mine to a bit less that 1/2 their OOB length.

Yes, I've taken a bit of ribbing in deer camp, but I always found it very convient for clearing a fire line, expecially when I was bow hunting.

Like to thank everyone who participated in this thread. We all have our individual likes and dislikes, but we can all learn from each other here.

Always interesred in what the other guy likes, and why.
