What exactly is it that makes the magazine a preban...

like.. take for example.. 4 components of a USGI 30 round magazine...

Follower & Spring - obviously doesn't signify pre-ban...

but... is it the body, or the floorplate, or a combination of both?

cus I see replacement colt/dpms/etc.. floorplates on ebay/everywhere ... i see replacement mag bodies that are ATF approved on ar15.com by some company for like 12$ a peice, then you add follower, and spring..... and boom... colt mag per USGI spec.... and.. ATF legal.... well atleast to the poiint where they wouldn't know the difference...

not saying to go out and do this.. just.... seems odd that you "could" do this.. unless theres some way of knowing that i'm not aware of...

I mean... I donno.. kinda confusing myself this one..

Body is the only thing that makes it preban.
In theory, you're supposed to submit an old magazine body if you are buying replacement post ban manufactured bodies. I'm not sure that anyone actually does that, however. Most bodies you see are pre-ban and not stamped with a date. There's about 25 years worth of production of them, so there's plenty to go around.

thanks for clearing that up...

ya.. i think the only thing the ATF has going for them with that is it isn't really cost effective.. i did the math and it'd be over 20 to 25$ a mag for.. assembled parts.. and shipping.. etc..

no point considering you can get USGI mags delivered for under 20$ a mag most of the time.. .. so why bother with peices
