I'm going to take some heavy flak on this one...but i shoot colt ($25.00) and Western 20 rd mags. The Western mags were $9.00 and i have had NO problems with them despite loads of use..you don't always get what you pay for! Buy, hey...i shoot NC Star scopes with no problems either:p

i have sanchez USGI's.. and people dog on em cus of the whole follower incident in the late 80's.. but mine with green followers function flawlessly.. i have yet to have a jam or fail to feed after over 400 rounds fired through my gun... couple times rapid fire too... wolf.. federal.. winchester.. remington... all types of ammo..
don't have any experience with other brands.. but i'd trust my sanchez mags with my life..

You should be OK with USGI. There was a problem with some early Cooper mags that had too few welds on the seams, but those are pretty much out of the system.
The one problem with buying used mags online is finding a reputable dealer. There are a lot of people out there that are buying worn-looking $12 30 rounders and spraying them with Permaslik and trying to peddle them for $20 - $25 or so. Some install green followers and new springs. I have seen some of these "refinished" and "upgraded" mags and quite frankly it is a buyer beware situation.
When I was looking for mags they were $3 to $5 each for 30s before the ban. I have bought some since then, but ONLY non-refinished ones. I want to know what I'm working with.

ya i agree with that..
i got mine NIW... came in the original USGI bags..
theres a few reputable sources I know of AR15.com's E/E
one in particular..
he sells refinished, but.. he takes NIW mags and sprays em with brownell's teflon moly coat.. I'll be damned if those weren't the prettiest highly functional mags I've ever seen... and only like 2$ more expensive than most people pay for the regular NIW..
but you're right.. be careful on ebay(well not for much longer  ) and stuff...
3$ a mag!!???
I really wish I had gotten into this before the ban... but I would have been 8-9 years old..... lol

September 1994... I was in boot camp when this happened. Until then, I thought Section 922r was the biggest travesty...
I didn't understand the full ramifications of the ban until I was well into my first duty station in late '95 and started hanging out with other shooters. I wanted an AR15 in the worst way since I was about 16. Particularly an A2 shorty. Little did I know how much cash it'd take me to get from my Norinco SKS to that, but six years later I was there...
Sorry, back to the topic. I've got Adventure Line, Center Ind. and Okay USGI mags and have no worries. I've also got a couple of the Brit steelies. I tried some Orlites and had trouble with the lips/front crumbling--others swear by 'em and have used 'em for years. Maybe I got the crappy ones. It's worth the extra cash to me to get USGI. I lucked out and got most of mine pretty cheap. STAY AWAY from USA/ Promag/etc. I had some no-name 30s that were a bit longer than normal, dark, black and steel. They sucked so bad I got rid of them at a loss and didn't mind.

Anyone know someone that refinishes AR mags for a fair price? Thanks

how many you thinking of? .. cus if its over 3 the price could be justified by just buying the stuff yourself....
can get a 30$ can of stuff at brownells for a teflon moly coat which is extremely durable...
or a 16$ can of permasilk-G which is what most refinish with at....GeorgiaPrecision (http://www.georgiaprecision.com/cart/items/Magazineparts.htm)
cus most people will charge like.. 5$ a peice plus return shipping.. then shipping there..
so. 15$ for 3 mags, plus 10$ shipping for both ways... thats 25$ invested for only 3 mags..
Take the stuff and get some steel wool and get rid of all the finish on your current mags.. wash em out with soapy water after dismantling them.. take some old coat hangers and cut the wire and hang the mags on a peice of wood or something so the mags are suspended.. then spray them lightly with a couple coats of the permasilk or teflon moly coat.. let them dry, then put them in the oven to cure them... wipe off the excess(only needed with the permasilk).. and reassemble your new looking mags...
easy :).. it would take a couple days at most and you'd have enough supplies to do 20+ mags
