What is the average interval to replace gas ring set? I've got almost 1800 rounds fired on my original set and found replacement is needed. I always clean & lube my rifle; today I found the forward ring worn and creeping out of the groove after experiencing short-stoke related feed problems.:

Should they be changed at about every 1500-1800 rounds or should I try a new oil? Now using Breakfree CLP. Thanx.

1800 rounds?? got to be another problem. Try a diffirent oil with new rings, but also chek the inside of the bolt carrier for a bur.;)

Thanks, Rew. What kind of service life have you been experiencing? The excessively worn ring was the in the forward position; the others are not as worn but all are wearing evenly around so it wouldn't be a burr. I checked and there are none. I'm gonna take measurements and monitor the next set. These are the original rings and it may have just been break-in. I'll also try Militec oil. I just want to figure out when I should replace them for regular maintenance.

I have never needed to replace a set before. I have about 4000 rounds thru my one bolt and barrel combo that is on it's 2ed upper. We would put untold 1000's thru our M16's over a period of years and never needed to replace the rings. Just to be safe I'd say every 5000 rounds maybe, but that is no more than a guess on my part. Good luck.;)

OK - I found info on Armalite's site. They figure that replacement should be between 3000-6000 rounds.
I e-mailed DPMS to see what they think caused it; no reply yet.

The gas rings should last at least 5000 rounds, but I also dont pull them off when I clean. Continusly taking them off will cause premature wear.
