I just acquired an AR-10 with a standard, carry-handle type receiver that I would like to get changed out to a flat-top model. That's a fairly simple job, given that it's just an over-grown AR-15...SORT OF! It seems that you need 'over-grown AR-15 tools' to do the job...something that not everyone has. Can anyone recommend a reputable outfit/person to do the job? What will the costs be (new receiver, the smith work, etc.)? Would they consider taking the old receiver in as partial trade? There is NOTHING wrong with it, I'm just at that point in my life where a good optic easily wins out over those 'teeny-weeny' peep sights..."the eyes just ain't as good as they once was!" Thanks for the info!

Swapping out the upper rec. will require a rec. block and a
barrel wrench. While it is fairly easy, by the time you buy the
tools and parts you would be just as well to send it to Armalite to
swap it out for you. You may try ar15.com equipment exchange and list it for a trade as well. Other than that there are several
other smiths that would do it although most of the big ones are
pretty busy and it may take a while. Have you tried any of your
local folks?

high5,
:)Thanks for the info...I'd given thought to all your ideas save the one of listing it for trade...that just might be a good option. It's just that my rifle has an extrordinarily accurate barrel on it & I'd like not to loose that. I checked & the tools ARE NOT CHEAP! :( As for local support on the thing, AR-10's are none-too-common anywhere, and here in eastern NC...well let's just say that I get lots of looks and questions at the range...right after I touch off the first round! Till then everyone thinks it's just another AR-15. So, I guess the short answer is that I'll find no help locally!

Again, thanks for the info.
