I have a Bushmaster 20" that came with an AK brake. If and when the ban expires, I'm thinking about replacing it with a birdcage FH. Was wondering if this brake is a slip on or if the barrel is threaded under it. It has a pin thru it and is probably silver sodered, I would assume. Anyone ever take one of these off and if so, how hard was it to get off??

I think the only Bushy model that has a threaded barrel underneath it is the M4. Does your AK brake stay the same width all the way to the rear, or is it fat at the rear? If it is fat, its a slip on. If its isnt fat, its a threaded one.

The brake is larger at the rear. So its a slip on kind. I'll just leave it as is, then. thanks for the reply and info.

I think all brakes from Bushmaster are threaded and blind pinned.

To my knowledge, Bushmaster does not do any "press on" applications...

Well, I think the only way to know for sure is to call them and ask them, which I may do in the near future.

Yes the brake is blind pinned in place. A bit of serious Dremel magic removed mine. It isn't an easy of quick task, but it is worth it to get that damned goofy brake off.

k9-Bob, what did it look like after you got it off. Was it threaded or unthreaded??

Mine was threaded under the brake.

Well, K9-Bob and RJ Shooter; Thats encouraging info. I can see the pin on mine. May try to knock it out and see if I can get it off.

If you remove the ak brake will the standard flash hider thread on properly?
and will it be long enough to make the barrel 16 oal ???

The standard threading is 1/2 X 28 TPI. If you have a 14.5" barrel, you will need to have a gunsmith permanently install a 1.5"+ flash hider either by Blind Pin, or Weld.

A barrel that is already 16" long will not need the FH permanently attached...

I made a call to Bushmaster a while back and mine is not threaded. I have a pin going thru the bottom of the brake near the rear. He told me that if it was threaded it would be blind pinned but mine has the pin thru the rear bottom and its loctited on a plain barrel. At least thats what he told me.

thanks there seems to be some question on how the breaks are attached
my rifle has what appears to be a washer and a pin toward the center of
the barrel
