And they say this thing is almost indestructible. At least there should be nothing AT that be called even distantly modern in today's Iraq, otherwise it would have been used by now. So what's up?

Other than the blown track it is hard to tell what other damage there is. Don't know if something penetrated the armor into the ammo or crew compartments. It is possible it was disabled and set ablaze by the crew to leave as little behind as possible. Looks like they left it in a hury with the M2 and 240 still on it.
At work I have a pic saved of another M1 that was hit in early in the invasion in Iraq. This tank was stripped and had no small arms on it and the turret was reversed lik eit was being towed which is one story I read about it.
Haven't head any offical story on that one either.

Where did you find these pics?

I hope the crew got out all right. Also hope the one fu$% accidently shoots himself in the head with his AK.

big IED underneath it, the crew got out. It did good and the M1 is definately nicer than Russkie tanks.

A funny aside is that these faggots were straffed by an AH1 moments after this photo was taken.

HA Good to know. Glad the crew survived.

I see the choppers in the second pic. Hopefully setting up for the gun run. WIth any luck the last thing they saw was a set of rotors and a bushmaster cannon before lights out.

Those fuckers deserve to eat lead. Hey oc192, just wondering but how'd you know they got wasted after the pic? Did it say in a caption or something?

chuck1, check the links under the pics. Some are from AP, some from Reuters, some from don't know where, but all picture the same event.

I have an idea about how the heavy armour gets busted in Iraq. I have a movie, but this forum desn't let me upload it. There an M-88 is attacked that way. In short, they aim RPG from a very close range from a position in a crossing street. Someone alerts the shooter about approaching target. Obviously, the crew can't see that position and it's way too late to do anything when they can. When the tank is passing the crossing, the RPG is fired just under the.. eh.. well, a little below the top of the skirt. The movie shows the granade in flight and where it's aimed. That way they disable the vehicle. The crew does the rest. With this tank, they could hit a ... eh, what the name ... the driving roller that is not covered with the skirt.
Just guessing, but there are other ways of turning a tank into a wreck except busting through it's most protected areas. Looks like iraqis have found them.

About the following strafing: no reports of that.
Here is the rest of the pics, I skipped them before because they are not very informative. But in case anyone is intersted:

What makes you think this was a mechanical malfunction? If I had to put money on it, I would say it was one hell of a IED.

The Iraqis also like to throw gasoline on disabled vehicles and light them up to make things look more dramatic.

Is that a penetration into the ammo compartment, on the back of the bustle rack, first picture? Hard to tell.

That was a lot of fire.

Marine M1A1 ~ fast track, no hunter-killer, no bustle APU

As for the jubilant Iraqis, don't forget combat sabot rounds have DU penetrators. They're breathing it in, with the smoke. They're getting something much better than a quick death by gunfire~

It does look like a hole on the right side of the turret but hard to tell. The drive sprocket is torn up for sure along with the broken track.

Might be bad from the DU but I would rather see em splattered all over the street.
