I've got a Colt Match Target Competition HBAR Cal. 223. The upper has the markings C MP 5.56 NATO 1/9 HBAR on the end of the barrel. It is a "post ban".

My problem is with rust on the barrel, and to a lesser extent, on the bolt face. Over the last two years I have not been able to fire it very often. Maybe 100 rounds every 3 months. So, it sits along with my other firearms. However, after just a week or so, I have surface rust in the barrel and a little on the bolt face. You can see the rust inside the barrel at the end.

So...what am I to do? With the new job, I might be in school quite a bit for the first year which means I won't be around to clean it. I'd hate to come back to it and not be able to see down the bore. Is there maybe some imperfection with my barrel that would cause this?

I'm just wondering if there is a better option to just selling it. Now that the AWB has gone away, I'm not sure it would be worth it.

Thanks

One way to store a firearm for a long time is to use normal automotive grease, the kind you pack wheel bareings with. Put a patch with all the grease it will carry down the bore in one direction only remove the patch from the rod and withdraw the rod from the bore. Do this only after haveing given the rifle a good cleaning. A light coat of grease on exposed STEEL areas will keep it from rusting. Be sure to remove all grease before firing the rifle again.;)

If you're located in Michigan, I can take car of your baby for you :D

How do you store your rifle? In a case? In a dehumified room? Gun locker?

I've got it in a gun safe. Funny thing is that none of my other firearms rust. I take that back...my DEs get a very light surface rust "haze" after sitting for a couple months in the winter.

Win70, Nova, 9200A1, Mar1895, Win94, Taurus Raging Bull, NMBH, Rem550-1 and the rest of the gang never rust. They're in the same storage.

Thanks for the suggestion for long term storage. Still wonder why my rifling rusts so darn quick. :(

hehehe Corpsie...I bet you would take care of her. :D

Maybe when I get to WV I'll shoot it more and not have to worry about it. :)

Have you done a super-duper job on the cleaning out the barrel using things such as copper solvent foam, Hoppes 9 and then oiling it fully?

Didn't do the copper solvent thing. I'm in BF North Dakota right now and getting stuff is tough. You pretty much have to order everything online. Just haven't done it yet.

I give it a good cleaning after I shoot it. I also give the barrel a good cleaning when I notice rust....every 1-3 weeks. LIke I said, I don't get to shoot much here. :( When I get done cleaning, I soak a patch in RemOil and coat the bore real good. ;)

I thought maybe I had some weird barrel thing. :)

Or maybe RemOil isn't working?
