My damn 91 Ford Ranger 4cyl tossed a damn Freeze Plug.
Fucking Cocksucker. :cryeyes: :mad: :cryeyes:

It overheated, and when I checked the radiator, it was bone dry. I went to fill it, and I heard this leaking. Damn think was pouring out live a civ.

Is there any place on the web that gives detailed instructions on how to replace these damn things?

I don't know about the web, but all you have to do is get a new freeze plug and tap it in with a spark plug socket and hammer. don't go too far with the hammering. A chiltons book will give the right answers and their available in most parts stores. Good luck

You're first problem is that it says " F O R D" on it.:D

Hope it's not one that you have to take something out to get at it ( like the transmission). If you can see it and get tools onto it, hammer it in all the way (trust me it's not going to drop into some void) then once its in and loose, take pliers and fold it in half and pull it out (needle nose vice grips work great). Then like ace said...hammer in a new one. I personally prefer replacing the stock ones with the rubber kind that are compression fit. They're so much easier and from my own experience last longer and are worth the extra buck.

When I saw that, my heart sunk.
I was hoping someone would say

But, it is DEFINITLEY coming from "way up in there"... Like, there is no way for me to just pop off a few parts and hammer a new one in. Meaning, I think I may have to yank the tranny- and I ain't got the skillz to do it. :mad: :cryeyes: :mad: :cryeyes:

. Oh well. It has 187,000 on it, a shitty camo paint job, and a 7.62MM Bullet hole in the floor- The engine still runs like a top though. I hate to junk it, but I don't think it's worth the $$$ fixin it. :(

Or you could just start taking stuff off the engine until you get enough room to deal with the plug, and hope you remember where everything goes ;)

Yup. I think outside the box. I am better making something totally unique, then working on something existing.
Still though. I've built a couplea 1911's-
I just never had anyone to show me how to work on cars. I only learned how to change my own oil 2 years ago.

I'm not a mechanic though I play one at my house.Seriously though,I took Diesel Mechanics in Tech school.
Freeze plugs are on the side of the block and on the front and back of the head most likely,nothing whatsoever to do with pulling your trans. McUzi......You're saying "way up there",so I'll go out on a limb and say there's a good possiblity it's the head gasket and/or a warped and/or cracked head from overheating.
You need to really identify EXACTLY where the water is leaking from.It's my experience that in overheating situations the head gasket will blow out,and/or the head will warp/crack before freeze plugs will come out....Sorry to be the probable bearer of bad news.

hey man, you should be able to go to your nearest auto parts store and get a rubber freeze plug. It is a lot easier than a metal one, It is a cone shape with a washer on the inside and a bolt running through it to a nut on the outside. You just set it in and tighten like Bvis said. You should hope it's not a cracked block.

Think of the rangers motor and trans as just another mechanical device.It comes apart by bolts and nuts.AND FOR GODS SAKE MAKE SURE THAT THE OTHER FREEZE PLUGS ARENT THE ONES THATS LEAKING.

With me once I figureout how something works I can usally fix it no problem.I suggest to anyone out there to learn something about how vehicles actully work and how to fix em.I have fixed SO MANY small problems on the side of the road that other people would of called a tow truck over cause they didnt know what was wrong or didnt ave tools or parts to fix it.I ride around wth a trunk full of tools and xtra parts just in case.........Only ha t call tow once when I crashed into a ditch trying to do a neutral drop (hehe ;) )

1 Patriot has a good point...it could be something else. But if your sure it's the freeze plug, then it should be on the side of the motor ( you may have to remove some Intake or Exhaust parts to get to it).:( I didn't mean to scare you about the trans thing, I just know that some V6's and V8's put 'em in the back of the block...I don't think I've ever seen that on a 4 cyl. though.

Hope you figure it out....life just wouldn't be the same with one less POS on the road. :D Especially one with a history like that.;)

Actually you do too....It may well be one in the back,on the head rather than the block.....I'm not sure if there is one on the back of the 4 cylinder head or not,and my manual doesn't show.It appears after rereading Mcuzi's second post that there is,and MAN is that going to be a bitch to get at!!!!!I know on the 6's just working on the distributor is a bitch,I can't imagine getting at the freeze plug,if there is one back there!!!!!

To drop the oil pan on my 6 cylinder ranger,I had to lift up the engine,so I imagine he may well have to virtually remove the trans and/or pull the whole mess out a little,just to get to it,if it's a freeze plug back there!!!!!

And it looks like there is one back there....GOOD LUCK getting to it if that's the problem.....

you know when you drove through that water you probably rusted it out. if this thing gets nasty I always drill a hole through it then use my little air driven sawzall to cut the lip through,then insert a screwdriver and pry it out. and yes get the one with the Oring and bolt. lube the oring with silicone grease(not sealer) then install. do NOT overtighten. p.s. this is a 12pack job

If its not leaking too bad try some bars leak, you'd be suprised what that stuff can do. If it works great, if not you're only out a couple bucks. If you're not worried about the heater core try a couple of bottles.
