I am going to order one and the sight is asking about a; BOLT CARRIER GROUP & CHARGING HANDLE, what is it and do I need to order one or does it come with one? I am new to AR's.

Thanks

Go to where it says "KITS" and order from there, it contains everything you need except for the stripped lower receiver.

The AR series of rifles comes apart into two "halves", the upper half (barrel, front grip, and bolt) and the lower half (buttstock and trigger/magazine stuff)

The upper half has the bolt (the part that picks up the cartridge and puts it in the barrel), and the bolt is housed in a part called the "bolt carrier." Together they comprise the "bolt carrier group." (The bolt is about the size of a finger, and the bolt carrier is about the size of a C-cell flashlight; the bolt fits inside the carrier, and also houses the firing pin)

The charging handle is the part that allows you to pull the BCG back (to load/unload the rifle) (You'll note that the AR series does not have the typical "bolt handle" sticking out of the side of the rifle)

You need both parts if the upper you're ordering does not already have them. Typically they're $100-$130 (BCG) and $20 for the charging handle.

A complete upper (with BCG and handle) will usually run in the $450 range, while one without might be in the $300-350 range. (Although I don't know of any "specials" that others might know about)

Hope this helps.

So when ordering a upper half I will also need to purchase the bolt carrier group and charging handle.

My plan is to order a complete upper from Model 1 and a complete lower from RRA and put them together.

Upper :16'' AR15 C.A.R. Upper Half, 5.56 NATO, chrome lined chamber & bore; 1-9 twist, A2 flashider; A3 with NM front sight, $8.00 option; CAR handguard, black; Bolt carrier group & charging handle, $85.00 option
Total $418

Lower:RRA Complete Lower Half, with Standard Trigger and 6 Position Tactical CAR Stock
Total $275

Total: $693, plus some fees

Any ideas, thoughts.

Thanks

If you get the CAR kit, it is complete except STRIPPED lower receiver. You will not be spending the close to $700 that you think.

Getting your lower receiver stripped instead of assembled is only going to save you about 30-50 bucks at BEST. You have the right idea in what you are doing ericcktm. You are not gonna beat $85 for bolt carrier group and charging handle anywhere. 700 is about what I spent on my last build and I did it the cheapest way possible. Order up that Upper, get that complete lower, slap those bitches together when you get them and go shooting. Course you gonna need mags and ammo too. :D

Oh, and welcome to the forums. :welcome:

Try $85, you can get a great stripped lower for $100. I just bought a Bushy stripped for $165, the kit has all lower parts. Big savings. Check your math.

Yeah but, for someone who is new and not sure what they are doing, especially about installing the FCG, might be best to do complete upper/lower for the first one and then learn how to completely take one apart.

Then tackle a build from scratch when comfortable. You'd lose any savings when you have to take a gunsmith your box of parts and say "Here, put it together for me!"

Just my 2 cents worth from another AR newbie!

Do whatever you are comfortable with ericcktm.

Well I went to my local gun shop and was talking to the guy about ordering the lower. He said he could do it, but according to him RRA is back ordered 3-4 months, since they are using all there available lowers to make complete rifles? Also, he would have to charge me $27.50, which is not alot but the wait was going to be to long. Heck 3-4 months they could repass the ban and I would be SOL.

So I bought this from the guy, Olympic Arms FAR-15 Featherweight AR .223, with retractable stock. $669. It looked good and functioned properly in the store. :Imconfuse If I like the way a .223 shoots, I will go ahead and order the RRA lower and have two.
