I would have voted in favor of the new design if I had cable or something besides dialup. Also if I didnt have to scroll to the right everytime a page loads, maybe transfer everything from the left to the right. Last but not least on the old seeting V1 I cant read any usernames that are not in blue or purple.

Im not trying to be negative I do like the new look, just wish I lived closer to suburbia for loading speed.

i think the website look great. i did find the the old (white back ground) site was easier to read. It is also takes forever to load. i think it may make people search for other websites that arnt as slow.

I like it.. but I also am on a bridged T1 99% of the time.... so.... it load times dont really effect me......

I think my only suggestion would be less of a gap between posts on a thread.... makes for more scrolling....

I feel for the guys on dial-up though.... cant even imagine...

I don't want to take anything away from you guys with high speed internet. I'd just like to see a third option for us with dial-up access = the ability to use the original format. Please consider this request Administrators.

If the "new site design" is an improvement, the imprvement escapes my grasp. Also, the site operation seems much slowed.

I do feel sorry for anyone with a slower connection.

Personally, I've just reverted the forum to the 'old' look, and I'm happy.

I liked the old design much better.. This would be great if I had the time to wait and wait and wait. It's far too slow with my dialup connection..

Alans, Look over on the left under change themes and choose V1 instead of V2.

I would suggest putting all the sidebar info on the home page and not on the other pages where we have to scroll over on every page. Make it faster loading and it is good to go.

I'm on dialup and don't stand a chance. Give me either V1 without the stuff on the left or else the old original version. You guys with cable, T1 and DSL have no idea what we are up against here.

I voted to get the original back. I've got cable and new version certainly seems slower. Don't like the colors of V2 but that's not a huge deal. Don't like the side bar on the left. It takes up too much real estate. I don't mind sponsor ads as I know it is necessary to keep the site up. But I don't like the whole "portal" idea.

I like the design, but it's only useful when I'm on high speed. About half of the time I'm on dialup, and it's a bit slow.

Actually, I have a DSL connection, and I've noticed a significant slowdown in load times. I can't imagine what it must be for dial-up.

-----

I like the V1/Blue and Slate color scheme a helluva whole lot better myself. It's just classier than the XBox themed V2.

I do notice a little slower respone from the site now. But not much really. I have 3meg cable and a state of the art computer so I can handle it. But I didnt vote because none of those options described my opinion of the change.

11-29-2004, 06:08 AM
Well, all you guys who sing the praises of it while enjoying the "state of the art components" I am happy for you. I would like to request that someone here just e-mail me (not private message) when the problem is fixed. I can't keep on like this. Good luck to you all.

And for those who think that some of us CAN'T HANDLE THE CHANGE..... change is fine IF you can get there to enjoy it. Best of luck to all.

I'm on DSL and still don't like the new changes.

I would like to know how the hell that crap on the left is an improvement? How the hell does it benefit ANYONE on the forum? I'm kind of pissed that there is a "Stop your whinning" attitude concerning the changes.

"Afraid of change", not hardly. Change is a good thing when it brings benefits. Change is not good when it is merely for the sake of change and brings no functional benefit, definitely not good when it's a detriment.

Thanks for the option of the original settings again.

I'm on dialup at home, 42K if I'm lucky with Earthlink Accelerator and the difference in the site speed is noticeable but not nearly the annoyance some are reporting. It takes about 10 seconds, maybe less for a page to open the first time or two but I can easily live with that. Here at work with a T-1 that routes through the corporate office several states away it's a lot slower but hey, I'm supposed to be working anyway. I tried the old styleoption a few minutes ago and my eyes noticed the change immediately. The new look is much, much easier on the eyes. Thanks Gunsnet.

Bad change. Left menu sucks for small screen resolution, makes scrolling to the right side to read annoying after the first thread.
I can appreciate all the work and effort, but hard to read to the point of squinting to see where to click, and takes for ever to load, and I'm on satellite.
I don't ever post but have been lurking, I guess I wont be doing that anymore either :(

Just got home from vacation and found this. I think it really, really sucks. It will not change to the old style or the "V1" style on my macintosh machine. And please I do not want to hear "you need a REAL machine" from the peanut gallery. Gunsnet is getting too big for their britches I think! Guys I do not have a 4' wide monitor either! From what I have been able to see, so far there is an overwhelming majority here who do not care for it at all. How the Adm. handles this may make the difference in the size of my next contribution. If I can't use it I'll not pay for it.

Im not gonna bother telling you that you need a new computer. But the fact that you can switch to the old style for those of you who cannot or refuse to join the "communication age" and still use dialup is a great idea. For the rest of us it seems to be fine. I wasnt sure at first but the new look is starting to grow on me

Hey! Im not trying to start something but some of us dont have the option to get on cable and all that other BS. I just spoke w/ Drugrunr today and he did some checking for me and told me I was screwed as far as other options. Well he did say I could do the dish network thing but that it isnt worth it. Im sure there are more people on here than you might think that dont live in suburbia and have all the choices some have...

Poseiden

"change your resolution"

"get DSL"

"join the communication age"

"Click the other button"

"stop whining"

I'll repeat it again, what benefit are these new changes? Considering this is a website devoted to words and expression I see little point in making it look like a gaming whorehouse.

For those of us who have been around awhile things were working just fine and dandy. We have had two MAJOR upgrades in as many months and neither have provided the end user with any real benefit. I'm not opposed to change when it's for a purpose, what particular purpose does this serve other than alienating those folks who live in the sticks and can't get any form of broadband. The site only reverted to the old style AFTER everyone pitched a bitch, it wasn't a consideration beforehand.

Yes, I've got DSL and a 21" monitor on 1280x1024 and I'm not effected, so what.

I know some people dont have the option of high speed internet. Thats why i said "CANNOT or refuse to join the communication age..." But there are ways to speed up load times for dialup users. My point was to not say that something sucks and is worthless just becuase you dont have the ability to use it properly.

REDTHANK YOU REDSTAR AND ZOUAVE!!!!!

I know I was getting to be a nuisance but I wasn't coming back otherwise.

It has been stated above that it's amazing, all the different spectrum of replies concerning the new forum. Those who have high speed internet are not much affected and few care about the rest of us. Not to mention, we don't always choose to live in the "Dark Ages" as mentioned above. I know.... I work for a major telecommunications company (HAVE for thirty years). To get DSL, I have to live LESS THAN EIGHTEEN THOUSAND FEET from the central office. I live TWENTY FIVE MILES from this office. That is WHY I can't get it. Cable?? Not a chance. The cable is many miles from here, too.

Not because I choose to remain in the dark or however else it was mentioned above. At least now we know who the Democrats are.

At any rate, I'm back on option three. It works just fine and I'm OK again.

Rumor has it that there is a way to select "old style" presentation. Where does one go to find the way to select same? Please advise.

As to other aspects, when the site comes up, the color scheme and moving banner ad is really impressive, but the thing takes forever to load. Ditto going from page 1 to page 2, which leaves me wondering as to the following. WHAT PRICE GLORY?

I'm on that old fashioned dial up type of connection, which works well enough with other sites of verious persuasions. I do not see why I should furthur enrich telephone theives by buying DSL or similar "high speed service".

In the event that using www.gunsnet.net becomes to much of a battle, or reaches the point of diminishing returns, I do hope that such is not the case, I suppose that I will have to give it up.

Meantime, if there is a "pull down" or perhaps a "rise up", where one can select what is this third version, the old fashioned way, would someone please let me know where I can find the thing.

Thank you.

Since we have a way for all to still enjoy the board I am going to close this thread. Some folks will still continue to complain no matter if there is a 'fix' or not and frankly I don't have the time to debate things that have been 'fixed'.

Thank you guys we do listen to you but there are many reasons why we are moving things forward for this website we are trying to stay on the cutting edge. In time the members who enjoy the new way will grow to never want to go back to the old way. I understand we have a more mature crowd here and changes like this are enough to freak you out. It scared the hell out of me too yesterday when I got the green machine, but I am going to give it a chance and see what I like better about it if anything. I am not going to make snap calls on it. People hate change and that is a fact no matter what anyone says. I am one who has hated every new version of gunsnet since 2000 and I have grown to like each one better after time.

y the way one of these days dial up is going to be obsolete. You are talking to a guy who still has a way outdated computer but I at least have cable- it is worth it. You can still use an old crappy computer and sail fast.

Anyway, in the interest of the board I am shutting down the thread. Everyone has a choice now.
