I am wanting to build up an AR in 7.62X39. Do any of the various AR suppliers offer a conversion upper in that caliber, preferable with a 16" barrel? Also, is there a source for 20 or 30 rnd mags for the thing? I know that this sort of thing has been offered in the past, but I haven't seen it offered lately.
Thanks in advance for the info!

I know this is an old thread but I am interested in the same thing. Model Ones has the uppers along w/10 rd mags. I am interested in what kind of a shooter it would be esp w/Russian ammo. I have a few AK's and couple of SKS's already so the supply of 7.62x39 is already in place.
Since I am being pulled to the dark side, putting my first AR together tomorrow, I would like to keep my ammo needs to a minimum. Of course since the first is a A2 then the second could be an M-4. This could get expensive. :thud:

There's several companies offering ARs in 7.62x39 Oly, Dpms even Colt made them at one time. The issue is the reliabilty and availablity of magazines. If you want 20-30 round mags good luck! Some guys have found the the USA franken mags work. I have seen an AR-47, part of the lower receiver is removed/modified to accept AK-47 mags that's the solution to the mag problem but you can't use the lower for anything else. I have toyed with idea of a 7.62x39 AR myself. Now that the AWB has expired maybe someone will manufacture new 30 round 7x62 mags that are reliable and don't cost a lot.
Take a look at this AR47.com

I thought about this issue hard before deciding against it. Ammo was the main obstacle. The ammo available will be foreign since it's cheaper and can be had in bulk. All the ammo in this case will leave much more residue behind but nothing an AK47 can't handle. An AR15 is a different animal. It's designed with tighter tolerances and more moving parts prompting jams and other issues. American ammo is made but difficult to get and more expensive.
